WINTER HOURS November thru March Mon- Sat 9am-1pm by Jane Finley writer * artist * teacher (stretching, exercise, relaxation, meditation) MOUNTAINS Mountain peaks along the highway, one after another, side by side, like so many party napkins dropped and forgotten. Shadows play hide and seek among their creases and folds, adding to their beauty. Behind them, taller mountains with just a sprinkling of snow on top, fine and sweet like powdered sugar. Farther away, the dense snow of Matterhorn look alikes. Down the road a piece, the closest mountains change to jagged peaks, their rough, metallic surfaces shiny, muted colors. When the sun sets, the mountains forget what they have been, what they are, and become smooth, round, and soft, turning to velvet. Written between Bend, Oregon and Winnemucca, Nevada Jane's book is WANDERINGS: Living the Ordinary Extraordi- narily (Stories from the Road). This column consists of poems from the book. First day of classes was August 3rd. The school had a big rise in enroll- ment this year and they owe that giant growth to the large incoming freshmen class. All together there are 128 students attending Salome High this year. This year's first volleyball game was on September 1st in Phoenix and the girls first home games were on Friday September 2nd. When talking with Coach Avila she said that the girls are going to be pre- pared for the games. When getting the girls prepared, she had them do many drills, some new rotations, and worked with them to improve their reaction times so they will be better prepared for the upcoming games. One of Coach Avila's goals is to be able to have all 29 girls have an opportunity to play. The first home football game was the same day, September 2nd, as the first home volleyball games. That game was against San Pasqual. This home game will be following the first game of the season which was on August 26th at Trivium. New assistant coach, Mr. Clough, and the head football coach, Mr.McCarty, said all the new players will have "first game jitters," but by the second quarter they will have full confidence in themselves. Coach Clough says that the seniors will help in teaching the new players how to stay calm and collected during the games. Even though Salome has a lot of new players, they hope to make it to the playoffs this year. Salome High School's Future Busi- ness Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter has placed coin collection boxes for the March of Dimes event in small establishments all through- out the surrounding area, such as Quartzsite, Bouse, Salome, Wen- den, and Aguila. March of Dimes is a charity event to raise money in order to assist premature babies. Those participating turn in the money they raised before starting a three mile walk towards the end of the event. Students from Salome High School will be leaving at 5:30 in the morning on September 10th for the Prescott Courthouse Plaza in Prescott, Arizona. The walk begins at 8:00 AM. On Thursday, August 18th, eighteen students gathered in front of the school to perform the folding cer- emony of the United States Flag. Ev- ery year, when the flag becomes torn and tattered, the senior government class takes on the responsibility of replacing it with a new one. After two days of practice, the flag fold- ing process was perfected and seven students were selected to carry out the ceremony. The rest of the class looked on and read aloud the mean- ing of each fold as it was performed. Afterwards, a new flag was raised and the old one was carried out to be disposed of properly.
