August 2016 Volume 3, Issue 3 Baseball Foundation Golden Bear News & Notes Celebrating 11 Graduating Seniors on Senior Day O n Saturday, May 21, Cal Baseball honored 11 graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony before a sellout crowd at Evans Diamond. The series against the Pac 12 Champion Utah Utes marked the final appearances at Evans Diamond for seniors Brian Celsi, Grant Diede, Brenden Farney, Nick Halamandaris, Jesse Kay, Mitchell Kranson, Ryan Mason, Devin Pearson, Sean Peters, Keaton Siomkin, and Jordan Talbot. Although the Bears would lose the series to Utah, there was a lot to celebrate with this tremendous senior class, beginning with Nick Halamandaris, who was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Halamandaris earned a spot on this prestigious first team for the third year in a row after he compiled a 3.43 GPA with a major in English. Devin Pearson and Sean Peters also earned All-Academic honorable mention honors. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor. Additionally, Halamandaris received a Pac-12 Conference honorable mention award for his outstanding season on the field. Mitchell Kranson was named a first team all-conference selection in his final year at Cal. For Kranson, a spot on the conference's first team was well deserved after he wrapped up his collegiate career hitting .333 with 15 doubles, five home runs, and 36 RBI. Kranson, along with fellow senior teammate Ryan Mason, will take their talents to the next level as both were drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2016 MLB draft. Nick Halamandaris and Keaton Siomkin also signed free agent contracts with the Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals. "I am extremely proud of what this exceptional group of seniors has accomplished and celebrate the fine young men they have become," said Head Coach David Esquer. CAl BASeBAll GAlA A HuGe SuCCeSS For love of the Game O n February 13, 2016, over 270 guests gathered at Memorial Stadium for A Celebration of Cal Baseball: For Love of the Game. The evening was perfect, allowing guests to enjoy spectacular views of the bay from the University Club during the VIP reception. Local Bay Area radio host Marty Lurie served as master of ceremonies, adding a special touch to the festivities. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Foundation Leadership Award to Jim Darby, Vice President of Easton and a long- time supporter of Cal Baseball. The night concluded with Brad Brian's delightful "Fireside Chat" with Jeff Kent, former Golden Bear and SF Giants second baseman. Thanks to the attendees and live auction participants, the Foundation was able to raise substantial funds to support Cal Baseball. We look forward to building on the success of the evening in 2017! SAve the DAte The second annual Cal Baseball Foundation Gala will be held Saturday night, January 28, 2017, at Memorial Stadium. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, entertainment, a live auction and a special "conversation" with our featured guest. Marty Lurie will return as the master of ceremonies. The evening will also feature a VIP reception with sports dignitaries. Mark your calendars for this special event! Neil Cummings was the big winner of the Jeff Kent Giants jersey.
