K A N S A S S I G Summer 2016 A P u b l i c a t i o n o f S i g m a C h i F r a t e r n i t y a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f K a n s a s R emember names like Irma, Bonnie, Mrs. Brown, and Mrs. Hartman from your years spent at 1439 Tennessee? They were all cooks who always gave you a "good morning" when you walked into the kitchen to order your breakfast. While these folks may no longer work in the kitchen at Alpha Xi, the equipment they used still does. Some, such as the stove/oven pictured, was actually moved from the original kitchen, where the housemother's apartment is now located, to the new kitchen in the addition built in the 1960s. The kitchen has not been updated since it was originally built, and we've been extremely fortunate the equipment has lasted this long. However, thanks to a lead gift from Greg Kallos '53, the kitchen at Alpha Xi will be completely refurbished and new equipment was purchased this summer. Demolition work began at the beginning of the summer break. The ceramic brick wall tiles in the kitchen remained, but new flooring was installed and the plumbing and electrical was upgraded. In addition, new ceiling tiles and lighting will be installed. Thanks to the efforts of Lloyd Doolittle '68, a new stove/oven, ventilation hood, convection oven, refrigerators and freezers, dishwasher, and aluminum tables and shelving were purchased and installed at a substantial discount. The estimate for the entire kitchen project is $200,000. Rather than organize a fundraising campaign to pay for the remodel, the House Corporation instead chose to use the Kansas Sig as the fundraising vehicle. We are asking both brothers and pledge classes to step up and contribute. If each pledge class since 1965 would contribute a minimum of $3,000, we could easily pay for a significant portion of the project. Individuals and pledge classes contributing more than $5,000 will be recognized on a plaque, which will be placed in the house. If you have questions about making a contribution, please contact Larry Pfeiffer '71 at larry_pfeiffer@ajg.com or Doug Miller '71 at doug@mhkcpas.com. Contributions should be made payable to "Alpha Xi of Sigma Chi Edication Foundation," our 501(c)(3), and mailed to Doug using the enclosed envelope. In Hoc, B. Updates include: new stove/oven, ventilation hood, convection oven, refrigerators and freezers, dishwasher, and aluminum tables and shelving. R ecruitment for the 2016-17 school year is off and running! We are expecting to take a class of about 25 young men. As you know, our best leads consistently come from alumni, just like you. Recruitment Chairmen Ryan Carter '18 and Luke Singer '19 have been charged with recruiting to the Jordan Standard, first and foremost, something we all know. Our next goal is to make the chapter more diverse by pledging more men from outside the Kansas City area. We know there are quality men in Hutchinson, Great Bend, Salina, Iola, and other Kansas towns and cities. We need you to help us find them. Don't let those men make the Manhattan Mistake. Our definition of a student of fair ability: • has a GPA above 3.25, • is active in sports or student government, • and has the congenial disposition that we are known for. Do You Know Someone Coming to KU? He Should Be a Sigma Chi! Please send your recommendations to me using the contact information below. Recommendations should include a resume, GPA, and a copy of his mid-senior year transcript when available. While I cannot promise your young man a Norman Shield on his chest, I can promise you that your recommendation will be acted upon. I will personally follow up to make sure he gets a good look…and then some. In Hoc, Harry Zecy '73 harryz@pcmleasing.com (816) 361-1936
