Once a Seahawk ... A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP SEABURY ACADEMY 2016 SPRING From the Head of School A s I reflect back on the 2015-16 school year, this has been an impressive year for athletics, arts, and education at Seabury. We have enjoyed our usual traditions: the advising jack-o'-lantern carving contest, the senior class cutting down and decorating a Christmas tree, Winter Formal, Headmaster's Holiday, the spirited Spring Fever Grudge Match between faculty and staff, our annual spring form trips, Renaissance Day, and an array of other events and memories. At this moment in the year, I always feel torn between two strange and powerful emotions: the joy of seeing our yearling 6th graders grow into "Seabury Kids"—and the sadness and pride as I look at our tall seniors and know they are now adults and ready to leave us and conquer the world. But, with that, they leave empty chairs for our future students. Thanks to everyone who helped us make this a great year! Yours respectfully, Dr. Schawang J acob Atem, one of the more than 3,000 Lost Boys of Sudan who were relocated to the United States, spoke to the 7th graders in late February. His engaging stories about running away from hostile militia and wild lions when he was only six years old kept the students enthralled and moved them to sincere selfies with him afterward. Many students were amazed at his strong faith in God and how it helped sustain him through very tough times. He was a true inspiration to all who were able to listen to his story! G reetings from BSAP! As we wrap up another school year, I want to take a moment to thank all of the parents and staff at Seabury who have given their time, energy, and financial support to various BSAP events. We couldn't do it without YOU! BSAP involvement helps to make this school a special place for our kids to learn and grow. As we continue to develop alongside the rest of the school, BSAP will undergo a few organizational changes. These changes will begin next year with a more streamlined and efficient approach to how we operate. To start, we have created an executive committee that consists of the president, vice president, and communications officer. This committee will work to create and organize BSAP events, fund other school-related needs, and communicate our work to the Seabury community. Shawn Bay, who is our current vice president, has stepped up to lead the way as BSAP president for 2016-17. If you see Shawn around, be sure to give her a high-five! Thank you for your support!
