TeamPsychopartici- pated in the Shasta Mud Run in Redding May 14. It was a blast, and it was awesome to see so many folks from Red Bluff there en- joying the muddy ob- stacles. Also, there were peo- ple of all ages and abilities making their way through the course. I was inspired by a number of older run- ners. If you've never done one, you should consider embarking on this kind of adventure. We plan on do- ing another one in Sep- tember, if any wants to get Psycho with us. We've been wanting to get our paddle boards back out on the river, but the weather hasn't been too float friendly lately. Hopefully we'll be heading down soon and will break new paddlers in and share new stories. As for the non-profit, I have learned that being a decent writer does not make one a good grant writer. I have received rejections from five lo- cal foundations and busi- nesses so far. The first two killed me. I do not do re- jection well. I kind of got numb to it on the fifth rejection and decided I needed professional help. I will be seeking the ser- vices of a professional grant writer very soon and will keep you updated on progress there. The fundraiser we had last month and a Go- FundMe account helped us meet our liability insur- ance costs. A huge thank you to all our friends and local businesses who do- nated. In April, my Judo coach Greg Blanco provided two free self defense classes and I provided one. Greg offered another free class in May and is going to of- fer one in June. Hit me up if you are interested. He is a phenomenal teacher, and you will learn some great tools. We continue to offer classes to students who are unable to afford the pay dues, mostly youth and high school students. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a student, please let me know. All do- nations are tax deductible. My next free self de- fense class will be May 31 at 5:30 p.m. Please come, bring your kids. Damsel in Defense will be there with her wonderful self defense products. In fighter news, our own golden boy Rocky "Rock- star" Golden is going to compete in his first box- ing match at Win River in July. I am very excited for this, as you know, boxing is my first love. I look for- ward to all of us getting a lot of sparring in with him and seeing him be success- ful in his fight. I miss fighting some- times, boxing especially, but I have no current plans of coming out of re- tirement. I miss the thrill of it, but I have taken up another goal. I am work- ing on giving my first ser- mon this month. I have to say, it's been a dream of mine for years, but I am more nervous about it than I have been for any fight I've ever had. It's nice to have a new thrill, one that doesn't in- clude brain damage. I'll be sure to let you know how it turns out. Until then, follow your dreams and God bless. Low and slow in the oven, at 365 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Healthier, greener houseplants Whether you've got a green thumb or not, you probably want your houseplants to thrive. It's better to water plants with club soda than plain water, as club soda con- tains phosphate and other nutrients that en- rich the soil and promote growth. Clean a window- blind cord The pull-down cord on your window blinds used to be white. Remember that? Here's a quick and easy way make it white again: Raise the blind so that the maximum amount of cord is exposed. Next, fill a strong gallon-sized zip- lock bag about halfway with a 50/50 mixture of water and liquid bleach (or liquid detergent if bleach makes your ner- vous). Gather up the cord and place it in the bag. Carefully twist the top of the bag and close it over the cord using one or two clothespins or clips. Let it sit in the bag overnight. In the morning, carefully remove the bag and wipe down the cord with a dry towel. Caution: This is likely a two-person job. Make sure you cover the floor underneath the win- dow in case of any spill- age. This method is a lit- tle tricky, but it works so well that it's worth the extra effort. Free fertilizer Used coffee grounds work well as a fertilizer and insect repellent in the garden. Plants that prefer acidic soils, such as rosebushes, azaleas, rho- dodendrons, evergreens and camellias, will espe- cially appreciate the left- overs from your morn- ing cup of coffee — decaf or regular. Not a coffee drinker? Ask the baristas at the coffee shop down the street to save some grounds for you. Diy wrinkle release spray You can spend $7.99 for a bottle of Downy Wrinkle Releaser. But why would you when you can make it yourself for just a couple of pennies? Pour 8 ounces distilled water into a spray bot- tle. Add 1 teaspoon liquid fabric softener and 1 tea- spoon rubbing alcohol. Close the lid tightly, and shake the bottle well. Set the spray pattern to fine mist. Spray the wrinkles with a fine mist, and then smooth out the wrin- kles with your hand. This spray will dry quickly, and the wrinkles will be gone. Gentle scrubbing cleanser Make your own eco- friendly gentle scrub- bing cleanser for cheap using just three ingredi- ents. Mix cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons liquid dish detergent (like blue Dawn) and enough white vinegar to make a smooth paste. Use this cleanser to clean the stovetop, sinks, bathtub, shower walls or any other place you need to scrub gently to not scratch the surface. Kids in museums Want to visit muse- ums with your children and avoid their bore- dom and tears? Head to the gift shop first and buy postcards of the mu- seum's most famous works. Create a trea- sure hunt for the kids by telling them to find the masterpieces on the cards within the mu- seum. Send the post- cards or add them to your trip album. Formica face-li If you have Formica countertops that you think are outdated, con- sider painting them. There are several meth- ods. Consult a good paint store, or check your local home-im- provement center. Prod- ucts such as Counter- top Transformations by Rust-Oleum or Giani Granite paint will up- date the look for a rea- sonable cost. Would you like t o send a tip to Mary? EVERYDAY CHEAPSKATE Low and slow bacon and 7 other useful tips REDDING Simpson Uni- versity's School of Educa- tion will be one of nearly 40 hosts statewide for the second annual Better To- gether: California Teachers Summit, a free statewide day of learning on July 29 open to all California preK- 12 teachers, teacher candi- dates, school administra- tors and other educators. The North State event will be held at Sequoia Middle School's McLaugh- lin Auditorium. Registra- tion is open online. During the summit, teachers come together to share ideas, build their net- works and learn the latest strategies for implement- ing the new California Stan- dards in their classrooms. Building on momentum from last year's event that drew 15,000 teachers, the summit will feature na- tionally renowned speakers, TED-style EdTalks high- lighting local teachers, and Edcamp-model facilitated discussions, led by teach- ers, for teachers. A unique partnership of organizations — The Asso- ciation of Independent Cali- fornia Colleges and Univer- sities (AICCU), the Califor- nia State University (CSU), and New Teacher Center — has joined together again to host this free statewide day of learning. Through their strong and distinct net- works, the organizers will reach educators at every stage in their development — new and veteran teach- ers, current teaching stu- dents, and alumni. "As California embraces new ways of teaching and learning, teachers want more opportunities to con- nect with and learn from their peers," said Ellen Moir, founder and CEO of New Teacher Center. "Sum- mit attendees will join a growing network of teach- ers teaching teachers, giv- ing them the opportunity to be both the experts and the learners." The summit will fea- ture best practices for im- plementing state priorities such as the California Stan- dards in English/Language Arts and Math and the Next Generation Science Stan- dards. The TED-style Ed- Talks will feature local teachers sharing strategies and classroom victories in implementing the Califor- nia Standards. "Teachers are the experts when it comes to the Cali- fornia Standards — no one knows more about what's working in the classroom and where more support is needed," said Claire C. Cavallaro, dean of Califor- nia State University, Ful- lerton College of Educa- tion. "By helping teachers build a powerful network of peers and access effec- tive resources, the summit will equip teachers to make an even bigger difference in their students' lives." During Edcamp sessions, teachers will pick their own topics — ranging from tech- nology in the classroom, to improving literacy in early education, or boosting sci- ence, technology, engineer- ing, and math education — and exchange ideas with colleagues from through- out the region. "In light of the loom- ing teacher shortage, we must do more to celebrate and support teachers," said Kristen Soares, president of AICCU. "The summit is a unique opportunity for teachers to come together to collaborate and re-en- ergize ahead of the new school year."
