T hough he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, Rob Zivney '68 says his father claimed he majored in fraternity. That double major paid off. Graduating in the early 1970s, jobs were in short supply, so Rob got his start in sales, ultimately working his way to the position of vice president of marketing. "I couldn't have made that transition without the education I got at Phi Psi. Serving as treasurer and house manager taught me about finance and finding creative solutions to the problems we came across." Rob made a name for himself in the security and building controls industry during a career that has spanned nearly 40 years. He has held positions with Hirsch Electronics and its parent company, Identive Group, Control Systems International (now Schneider), MCC Powers (now Siemens) and Honeywell. He serves with numerous industry groups, has testified before Congress regarding smart ID cards and is an industry speaker. Now in semi-retirement, Rob works as a consultant out of Frisco, Texas. Though his career has taken him to Chicago and California, Rob has remained connected to the University of Texas, having attended every U.T. national football game in his lifetime, starting with Texas' 1963 National Championship against Roger Staubach's Navy. Since Rob and his wife, Margie, returned to Texas about five years ago, he has enjoyed reuniting with Phi Psi and his Texas Alpha brothers. Part of that renewed Phi Psi connection has been Rob's decision to give back to Texas Alpha through the current efforts for the new house. "I've learned a lot about giving back over the years, and when I think about what I got out of the fraternity, it makes me excited to contribute to the chapter." "I'm particularly inspired by the design of the new house. I've been in charge of training programs in my career, and I see those same concepts incorporated into the design of this house. It's like a corporate center for the development of men. It's not just social and I'm so impressed by that planning." Rob and Margie get back to Austin regularly during the football season and Rob keeps busy with woodcarving, travel, photography, gardening and golf. They have two daughters, Darla and Anna, and two grandchildren— one a future U.T. linebacker. Rob can be reached at rzivney@att.net. Rob Zivney '68 carved this Phi Psi Crest during his last year at U.T. using a plank of Philippine mahogany. It hung in the chapter house for a year after it was completed. (Continued from page 3) Chapter Eternal Terence Curtis '55 entered Chapter Eternal on August 4, 2015. He lived in Amarillo, Texas. He earned a business degree from U.T. and founded Curtis Company Realtors in Amarillo where he lived with his wife, Melonye, who passed away in 2007. Terrence was an avid sportsman and loved being outdoors. He is survived by his significant other, Rita Tyler; children, Caytie and Tom; and two grandchildren. Alumni News Lloyd Hand '48 resides in Washington, D.C., with his wife, Lucy. They have three daughters. Lloyd is a senior counsel with the law firm King & Spalding LLP. He and his wife, Fay Beth, have four children. Louis shares, "I was part of the Phi Psi group to go to Duffau, Texas, to place a new grave stone on William Letterman's grave. I was one of three chapter delegates to the 100th GAC in Pittsburgh." Jim Jeffries '61 shares, "My wife of 42 years, Olga, who many of you will remember, and I moved from Houston to be close to our daughters, Vanessa and Camille. We bought a new house in Los Colonies and moved in December 2014. I hope to renew old friendships and find new ones." E-mail: drjamesjeffries@gmail.com Chuck Williams Jr. '77 is the CFO for Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance. He and his Alumni Update Page 4 (Continued on page 6) Texas Alpha to the Top ROB ZIVNEY '68 GIVES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG PHI PSIS Daniel is close to the work at Texas Alpha, having served as a volunteer on the Texas Alpha Management Corporation since 2003. His role as president and, currently, as treasurer have kept him in touch with the chapter and served as a sort of fountain of youth while working alongside the young Phi Psis. These volunteer roles as an alumnus are a continuation of the responsibilities Daniel had as an undergraduate, serving as rush captain, vice president, and assistant treasurer. "Every office I held at Phi Psi gave me lessons that I took into the real world. As rush captain, I learned sales. As assistant treasurer, I learned the value of understanding cash flow and budgeting in accounting and business. I learned how business really works and had experiences that were far more valuable than what I learned in the classroom." In his career, Daniel and his business partner opened Dallas-based Patronus Advisors in 2008, a registered investment advisory business. He and his wife, Victoria, make their home in Plano and welcomed their son, John Charles, in September 2015. Daniel can be reached at dharvey39@hotmail.com. Providing for the next generation
