She received her undergraduate and master's degrees from University of the Incarnate Word and holds minors in mathematics, reading, and special education. Having experienced public and private schools before coming to St. Pius, Sophia has been excited to join in building the foundations of religion and education in our young students. "I love what the school and the church stand for," said Sophia. "The students come to school excited to learn, creating a unique bond between the students and teachers. The administration backs up that experience and invites parents to be a part of their children's education. Parents want to be involved and the communication between families and teachers is phenomenal." Education has always been a passion for Sophia and she stands by a philosophy of the constant pursuit of intellectual growth. "I've always said that people and things may come and go, but your mind is always with you. So, strengthen your mind. Do all that you can to experience life and grow. Your education will always stay with you, so make it as strong as possible." Sophia takes this attitude into her classroom, challenging her young students to excel in each subject. The class has made great strides in math, even as they've tackled fractions and division. Sophia has setup math drills as the students enter the classroom and leave for recess—activities that the students look forward to and even miss if they're not on the day's agenda. In her time outside of school, Sophia stays active tutoring high school math students, reading, playing the violin, and trying new restaurants. She's an avid crafter and a runner, participating in 5k races. (Left) Every year, eighth-grade students perform a bilingual Our Lady of Guadalupe play based on the life of Saint Juan Diego. This is a fun way to learn about the Catholic faith and Mexican traditions. (Middle) With words like pungency, xerography, and faucet, our spelling bee began. Twenty-four classroom champions gathered until there was only one contestant left. Congratulations to Karolina S. in third grade, our new spelling bee champion! (Right) Eighth-grade students constructed cars out of mousetraps and held a competition to see which car could move the farthest. The winning distance was 27.2 meters, almost the entire length of the gym. girLs a BaskeTBaLL Team named aiaL ChamPs C ongratulations to our girls A basketball team—the 2015-16 AIAL Class AA champions! It was an exciting game that went down to the wire against the very tough St. Luke's team. The final score was 22 to 20. One starter short, St. Pius X still managed to have a 10-point lead in the second half behind the three- point shooting of Gabby B. Sarah M. and Cece G. controlled the boards, and Sarah L. and Leilani G. applied defensive pressure on their guards. Our defense played an outstanding game all night and proved that defense wins championships. Great job, ladies!
