St. Pius X Catholic School Page 3 Mike and Bernie O'Grady Selected as Gala Guests of Honor S t. Pius X School was pleased to honor Mike and Bernie O'Grady as this year's Gala guests of honor. The couple, who married in 1952, has raised six beautiful children and is proud grandparents of eight. Their faith in God and participation in the church is evident in their careers and the organizations they proudly serve. During his career, Mike was a teacher, coach, and principal working in schools across the country. The couple brought their family back to San Antonio in 1972 and became active members of SPX Church. They both worked in insurance until their retirement from USAA in 1989. Mike also held membership with the SW Officials Association, officiating high school and college football, basketball, baseball, softball, and track. Mike became a regular at the SPX School, volunteering in the gym as a PE teacher and track coach. His fondest memories are sweeping the gym floor every morning to his sweet Irish music. Mike and Bernie both taught CCD and are currently ACTS members. Mike holds membership in the K of C, Cultural Society, Ancient Order of Hibernians, VFW, American Legion, and Catholic War Veterans. Bernie is a member of the Confederate Women and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. As you can tell by Mike and Bernie's life, they love their God, family, and country. Each hands-on lesson explains one letter of the alphabet along with an arts and crafts activity, saint of the week, and a Bible verse. The ELC program balances centers-based, thematic learning with the Happily Ever After curriculum from the Rowland Reading Foundation and Zaner-Bloser in order to provide our students with integrated learning opportunities through the introduction of new vocabulary, concepts, and learning skills. Daily small-group instruction provides multiple opportunities for children to learn and develop skills with teacher modeling, guidance, immediate feedback, and support. Small-group lessons focus on the most predictive skills, phonological awareness, alphabet recognition, and mathematics.
