The Sunflower Page 2 2 0 1 6 D i s t i n g u T he Honorable David Waxse '67, Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court in Kansas City, Kansas, is one of Kansas DU's 2016 Distinguished Alumni. He took away so much from Delta Upsilon Fraternity, not only the lessons he learned from his time as an undergraduate, but also the friendships and brotherhood that have stuck with him ever since. "I needed a lot of education about the world outside of the small town where I grew up," David said. "DU provided that for me, and I appreciated it." David earned his B.A. in political science from KU and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. He is currently on recall status as a Federal Magistrate Judge, meaning he has retired, but continues to work part time. He also does a lot of presentations on electronic discovery, both around the country and in numerous foreign countries. "I have remained active in the American Bar Association (ABA), where last year I was the chair of the judicial division of the ABA. In that role I worked on solving the problems of forensic science in the criminal justice system. That problem is best described in a report from the National Academy of Sciences that found that other than DNA evidence, all of the currently used forensic science is not scientifically valid. This has resulted in the exoneration of a large number of defendants who were convicted on the basis of invalid science." Some highlights of David's career include his volunteer work as a lawyer with the ACLU, which involved handling important civil liberties cases as well as serving on both the local affiliate and national boards. In addition to his judicial duties, he was also instrumental in the development of the law relating to electronically stored information. In point of fact, an ABA Journal article on Judge Waxse and several other lawyers refers to them as the "rock stars of the electronic discovery world." David is also viewed as a rock star by his DU brothers. He is honored to be named one of Kansas DU's 2016 Distinguished Alumni, a notable title bestowed by fellow DU graduates. "It makes me feel very good that my DU brothers feel that I have done worthwhile things for my community and profession. It was very important to me, and I feel it's very important for young professionals to find a job that not only provides enough resources to allow you to raise a family, but that you enjoy and allows development of something positive for your community." David and his wife, Judy, have four children and four grandchildren. They enjoy attending musical and cultural events, and traveling both in the U.S. and abroad. David also writes and speaks on both electronic discovery and forensic science in the criminal justice system. And he always finds time for sports and cheering on the Jayhawks.
