Got Drugs? Turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal Mon - Fri. 8am-5pm Quartzsite Police Department 14 www.DesertMessenger.com March 16, 2016 Blood drive April 25 General Federation Women's Club (GFWC) is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Monday April 25th 9:15 am - 1:30 pm at the Community Center. All donors will be entered into a drawing for two (2) admis- sions to the Miranda Lambert concert on Friday May 6th at the E-center in Laughlin. One unit of blood that is donated, can provide for 3 blood transfu- sions, so, in essence, you are help- ing 3 patients with your one unit (approximately 1 pint) of blood. It is estimated that 80% of the US population will need a blood trans- fusion in their lifetime. The blood you donate at your blood drive is tested, processed and delivered back into our local community hospitals to provide for surgery and chemotherapy patients, people who have blood disorders, newborn babies, expectant mothers and - of course - traumatic situations, such as accidents, shootings, etc. Several factors affect our commu- nity blood bank's supply of blood for hospital patients: 1. Donors have moved away or are traveling or working and are unavailable to donate in their com- munities 2. Many donors are deferred due to low iron, dehydration, high or low blood pressure, medications, elevated pulse rate, blood disorders (anemia), or have traveled to re- stricted areas outside of the United States 3. Apathy - "someone else will do- nate, so I don't need to" 4. People assume that they are not eligible to donate due to age or health issues. For instance, diabe- tes does not always defer an indi- vidual from donating. Donor requirements: 1. Donors must be at least 17 years of age - ??? (no age limit) and in good health. 2. YOU MUST BRING A PICTURE ID WITH FIRST AND LAST NAME TO THE BLOOD DRIVE 3. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds (height and weight restric- tions pertain to donors between the age of 17-22. 4. Tattoos must be at least one year old 5. Donors must wait 56 days after their last donation before they are eligible to donate for a single dona- tion 6. Donors, who gave a double, must wait 112 days after their last donation before they are eligible to donate 7. Expectant mothers cannot do- nate 8. Donors must be in good health i.e., no cold, flu or flu like symp- toms 9. Surgery patients are also tempo- rarily deferred from donating (Call (1-877-827-4376 for specific infor- mation on the wait time between donations.) Schedule your appointment to give blood at www.unitedbloodservices. org and pick your site as Quartzsite or call 877-UBS-HERO (877-827- 4376). Please bring your photo ID and donor card. The kids are excited to receive the generous donations from the veterans association. The youth are learning about team work. They must also maintain good grades to be able to play. Organized sports activity helps children develop and improve cognitive skills, according to a study of that tracked kids from kindergarten through fourth grade (Piche, 2014). Physical activity in general is associated with improved academic achievement, including grades and standardized test scores. Further, such activity can affect attitudes and academic behavior, including enhanced concentration, attention, and improved classroom behavior (GAO, 2012). Mt.
