The science of Cryptanalysis, supplemented with considerable research, guidance from tribal elders, other artifacts found in-situ, and some imagination, helps anthropologists to decipher Rock Art glyphs. Cryptanalysis is a linguistic science, and has been used to decode Egyptian hieroglyph- ics, cuneiform, Linear B, Hittite, and some of the Mayan dialects. Rock Art glyphs in the US present a unique challenge, however, due to the immense variety and number of sites, panels, and images, as well as the differences in language and world view amongst geographically diverse groups. While some words like sky, water, or hunt may occur ROCKS FROM PAGE 11 across the board in some form, other words like kachina or buffalo are culturally or regionally specifi c. Here in Quartzsite, we are fortunate to have several beautiful Rock Art Sites close to town. Petroglyphs can be seen at Dripping Springs and along a rock outcropping in Tyson Wash. The Tyson Wash site also has grinding holes and a small cave. In both locations water is typically present year-round. The famous Bouse Fisherman Geoglyph can be found along Plomosa Road, while other less well-preserved intaglios are located by Q Mountain and on CA Hwy. 95 north of Blythe. When you visit the sites, spend some time experiencing the images. Look at them separately, in context as a group, and as part of the environ- ment. What do you see? What do you hear? Let the images speak to you. You do not have to be a scien- tist, a linguist, or a tribal elder to hear what the rocks will say to you. Tune in to nature and to the Rock Art site. Let your spirit and your imagination go free, and in your heart you will hear the rocks speak.
