Sighs of Psi PSI CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA EPSILON AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA t WINTER 2016 INSIDE: Alumni News • 2 Alumni Spotlight • 3 From the Historian • 4-6 CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS PSI ENDS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR T here really aren't any issues to report with respect to the Chapter. Although grades could use improving, it has been smooth sailing in a year that has seen other fraternities have members arrested for hazing or drugs. Looking to close out the school year, Alabama has won its sixteenth national championship and DKE International has once again asked the Psi Chapter to host the bi-annual convention. In the words of Yogi Berra: "It's like déjà vu all over again." ITB, Black Chaffe '83 We want to hear from you D rop us a note. Write us a story. Tell us what happened when you were a DKE. Or tell us how you're getting along today. Tell us about your work, your play, your reunions, get-togethers, promotions, demotions. Lie if you need to. E-mail: leemiltonhurley@gmail.com Keep on Keeping on H olding the position of Brother Beta is a challenging and demanding experience, but I am grateful I was able to serve my Chapter in this way. Sure there were phone calls that seemed to last forever, grueling applications, and stressful situations, but the result was the lasting friend- ships I made and the progress of this Chapter from when I was a newboy in the fall of 2012. MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS CONTINUE TO GROW The Psi Chapter continues to grow. Because of our four-year membership agreement, we have had some of the biggest senior classes on campus. When I came to campus in 2012, the senior class had started with 33 mem- bers and had 23 active that August. By contrast, my class began with 42 young men and we have 36 active for their senior year with 19 living in the house. In the past four years, I have seen the size of the incoming classes grow and, maybe more importantly, members are staying for all four years. PSI EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS Fraternities across campus had hazing problems this past year, yet, once again, we had no material issues with the university and were able to complete our entire pledge program. It is my hope that the newly initiated members gained a respect for the house and the brotherhood and, after speaking to many of them as active brothers, I believe the bonds of our brotherhood were secured in them and they will further the tradition and reputation of DKE. With AL.com articles being released in December about drug use and drug testing in fraternities, DKE continues to be the leading standard for drug testing on campus and nationwide. My executive team and I received texts or e-mails from chapters nationwide inquiring about our system. The Psi Chapter will continue to evolve its policies to help its members be all that they can be. CHAPTER ACTIVITIES Because of our superior application, and some help from other fraternities, DKE was once again front row in Bryant-Denny Stadium for the majority of the football season. Many of our members were showcased on TV and the jumbotron, with "Dancing Bro" receiving much attention. He not only helped pump up the crowd, but he also portrayed a wonderful image for Delta Kappa Epsilon. In all honesty, our academic performance was not where we wanted it to be after the spring 2015 semester. While we were still above many fraterni- ties and the campus as a whole, we strive for goals much higher. To that end, we increased study halls and added emphasis on academics, which we expect will show when the Chapter's final grades are released. As my class leaves in a few short months, I know that the Chapter is in good hands. There are great leaders coming through the ranks who will continue to improve the Chapter. I cannot express my appreciation to the executive board and countless other members who have sacrificed so much to help us be successful. This Fraternity has meant a great deal in my life, and I am honored to have been able to give back.
