43 www.thejewelrybook.com i n t e r v i e w d av i d h e s t o n I'll wear one piece for a long time, sometimes for years, but then I change them out. When I make something new, I try it on, wear it. It needs to be com- fortable so I make sure of that. My work is heavy, substantial. You need to pick it up and feel it – the weight and the balance is so important. That's how my work gets sold. It needs to feel good on your body. Trying it out is my job. Who is your clientele? I have a big line with something for everybody but I get a lot of inter- est from the music industry and athletes. The scale of my work fits their lifestyle…and with athletes their size! My clients range from men in their 60's to young guys just figuring out how they want to wear jewelry. Recently I was in Oklahoma where I met a very prestigious heart sur- geon at a trunk show. He said he didn't wear jewelry but I encouraged him to try a brown leather bracelet to go with the suit he was wearing, and he bought it. If a guy feels confident wearing the jewelry, he's hooked. so what are your tips for someone who would like to start collecting jewelry? The best place for guys to start is with a bracelet. He can wear it with his watch or on the other wrist. They have lots of options – for example, a simple leather cord with a cool clasp is a great starter piece to get com- fortable with something on their wrist. Believe me, the compliments will come. This boosts their confidence and they come back to buy bigger pieces and cooler pieces. They come back and say, "I didn't think I could wear that. I love it!" It's just a matter of getting into it. I think it is the same with retailers selling men's jewelry. They need to invest in a starter collection and then they call back reordering every week. I have a new retailer in Carmel, CA that is doing exactly this after years of debating how to incorporate men's jewelry into their store. Now they can't keep it in stock. www.hestondesigns.com "i didn't think i could wear that. i love it!"
