January 20, 2016 www.DesertMessenger.com 5 Corner of Moon Mt. & Cowell • Quartzsite • 928-927-5400 QUARTZSITE'S ONLY YEAR ROUND SALON Cheyanne, Debbi, Linda, Sheryl, Sandy, Beth, Janna, Jo, & Rina ARE HERE FOR ALL YOUR OPEN YEAR ROUND! Hair, Nails, and Pedicure Services by Joanne Winer Anyone who lives in Quartzsite or is visiting for awhile has probably heard the sirens blaring at least once a day--that is our emergency response firefighter/EMT's going out on a call for medical issues, road accidents, and any emergencies that occur. It is especially noticeable during the winter months when the town is so crowded with people and the chances are higher that services will be needed. Our Quartzsite Fire Dept. and all the firefighters do such a great job at any time of year, and we all love them for their service to our town. This is the way we feel about our firefighters and police who work so hard for us. When one of them gets injured, the town rallies around the families and tries to do whatever they can to help one of our finest. Such a thing happened recently when one of the firefighter/EMT's was in a terrible accident on his ATV and sustained severe head trauma. His name is Ste- ven Parkerson, he is 27 years old, is a loving son, brother, boyfriend, step- father to 2 children, and a friend as well as a great asset to the Fire Dept. Several fundraisers have been planned to help this man and his family during this terrible time. He is now still in intensive care in a hospital in Phoenix and will be there for quite awhile--it may take a long time for any recovery. As he was only working part time for our Fire Dept. and for the McMullen Valley Fire Dept. there is no insur- ance, so he really needs our help. The Fire Dept. is selling T-shirts online for only $20 at www.booster. com/stevenstrong (Hurry! T-shirt Campaign closes soon!) They also have an account set up on www.go- fundme.com if you wish to donate. The Firefighters are also going to have a table set up at Tyson Wells Sell-a-Rama until the end of their show on the 24th where they will be selling T-shirts and the new Quartz- siteopoly games where all the pro- ceeds will be going directly to Ste- ven and his family after expenses. A Pancake Breakfast is also planned for January 31 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Fire Sta- tion on Tyson Dr. at the north end of town. The breakfast will include 2 pancakes, 2 sausages, scrambled eggs, orange juice, water or coffee for a donation of $5 with all the pro- ceeds going to his family as well. Please help us to help this fam- ily and the firefighter who helps us all by donating, buying a t-shirt, or game, or coming to the breakfast on the 31st. Injured Quartzsite firefighter needs our help La Paz County School Superin- tendent Jacque Price appointed Dr. Christina Anastasia to the Quartzsite Elementary School District Govern- ing Board, effective December 9, 2015 and Mr. Chris Haines to the Wenden Elementary School District Governing Board, effective Decem- ber 22, 2015. Both Dr. Anastasia's and Mr. Haines' terms run through December 31, 2016. Dr. Anastasia will be eligible to run for election in November, 2016 for an additional 2 year term in Quartzsite ESD. Mr. Haines will be eligible to run for election in November, 2016 for a full 4 year term in Wenden ESD.
