(Quote): "Hailed as one of the most successful global health programs ever, the $10 billion GPEI has im- munized more than 2.5 billion chil- dren in over 200 countries around the world since its launch. Its ini- tial goal was a polio-free world by 2000, but the struggle against the disease turned out much tougher than many thought. Among other challenges, vaccination teams faced strong opposition from religious groups in target countries, with scores of polio workers killed over the past decade. Today, that goal finally seems with- in reach. Over the past year, Nigeria has not reported a single new case of wild poliovirus type 1; reported cases in Pakistan have declined by 80 percent since mid-2014; and vaccination teams have managed to reach all but a few remote areas in Afghanistan. The global health community is op- timistic about achieving full, world- wide eradication by 2019, coincid- ing with the 30th anniversary of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. For Dr. John Sever, vice chair of Ro- tary's International PolioPlus Com- mittee and one of the few remaining original "polio warriors" of the late 1970s, it would mean the realization of a lifetime ambition." I am not sure if you know about the suicide bombing at one of our End- PolioNow clinics in Pakistan that occurred on January 12, 2016. Four- teen people were killed. The major- ity were volunteers who give of their lives and travel at their own cost to help with oral polio vaccinations in these 'danger zones'. The last 3 countries in the world that we are trying to eradicate polio from (Paki- stan, Afghanistan and Nigeria) are Rotary Here we are, starting a New Year with a bang. Seeing a lot more peo- ple out and about at the Venders and Stores. Lines at the Post Office. We know it is that time of the year again. This month the Quartzsite Com- munity Thrift store was able to do- nate $2000 back to the Community. We gave to the Quartzsite Fire Dept., Tyson Stage Stop Museum, and Quartzsite Public Library. These or- ganizations are a great service to our Community. Come visit and shop with us. if you have donations, drop off behind the store. There will be someone to help you unload. We are located back of Silly Al's Pizza. ~Martha Thrift Store dangerous territories whereby these special volunteers not only say 'yes' and are aware of the dangers, they are very brave and unselfish! We hon- or them. For more informa- tion, please see: http://www. endpolio.org/ We haven't mentioned these occurrences for eradicating Polio is the "end game." We, globally, are winning. Our club recently gave a check for over $725 for our International Rotary project: EndPolioNow. It is a small amount for them but a big one for us. Rotary knows it takes every lit- tle club like ours to make it happen, GO Quartzsite! On that note, we want to let the community know we will return the "Fun Run, Walk, Rock and Roll" Event for Rotary Day in the late fall of 2016, watch for it! Many people want it back, so it's coming. The net profits will go between our Food Bank and EndPolioNow just as it did last time. We hope you come for health and fun!
