ALUMNAE UPDATE
IN MEMORIAM
Julie Phillips Karpinski '94 passed away
September 7 at age 39 after a long, courageous
battle against breast cancer. She will be truly
missed by all who knew her and were touched by
her warm personality. Julie held the positions of
intramural and philanthropy chairman during her
tenure at Phi Chapter. She was not only a mentor
but a true role model for Alpha Chi Omega for
generations to come, not only at Phi but the
national level as well. Julie graduated from KU's
prestigious pharmacy school in 2000 and exceled
in her career endeavors. In addition to all of her
work accolades, her true passion was being an
amazing mother and wife to her sons, Lucas and
Elijah, and her devoted husband, Todd.
Mary Fassnacht Whitaker '59, our beloved
Phi Chapter sister, passed away Wednesday,
November 18 at age 74, at home with her family
after a long courageous battle with pancreatic
cancer. She will be truly missed by all that knew
her and all of her efforts to make Alpha Chi
Omega what it is today. Mary held numerous
leadership positions at Phi chapter as a collegiate,
inspiring her to be a special education teacher.
As an alumna, she was the House Corporation
Board (HCB) President, chapter advisor, and
province president; she loved being an Alpha
Chi and Kansas Jayhawk. Most recently, Mary
was an HCB board member and centennial
chairwoman in 2014 at Phi but volunteered at
the national level as well. She won the Alpha
Chi Omega of the Year award in 2014 for the
Mu Mu Greater Kansas City Alumnae Chapter.
Mary was the Alpha Chi that we all aspire to
be. In addition to all of her philanthropic and
professional accolades, her true passion was
being a devoted mother to her daughter Lori
Whitaker Chandler '87 and showing the world
to her grandchildren.
