14 www.DesertMessenger.com December 2, 2015 Rotary Doings By Violet Kiss Our Quartzsite Rotary Club would like to announce Miss Moriah Freedman, a sophomore at Salome High School, is our new chosen Delegate going to RYLA-2016 this January. RYLA stands for "Rotary Youth Leadership Awards". Moriah exemplifies confidence, involve- ment, honesty, caring for others, citizenship and even entrepreneur- ship. She will be one young lady to watch in our Quartzsite area! RYLA is for young people ages 14- 17 and is our phenomenal annual Rotary youth leadership confer- ence. It is held each year over the Martin Luther King Holiday week- end in January at Camp Pinerock in Prescott and fully paid by our local Rotary Clubs. Especially targeted at sophomore and junior students from our high schools, this weekend camp experience challenges youth to recognize their personal potential, and pushes them to reach higher than they have ever thought they could. The activities are designed to build per- sonal confidence, teach interdepen- dence among team members, and hone leadership skills. Scholarships to attend this leadership camp are provided by sponsoring Rotary clubs to those RYLA Delegates they feel will most benefit from the experience. The RYLA theme is "Be Brave, Be RYLA, Be You!" PROSPECTORS RENDEVOUS RV Low monthly rates for season! Water & Sewer Included $ 110/month for five-month season lease Located 6 Miles South of Quartzsite 29620 N. 53 rd St. in La Paz Valley • 928-927-6661 RV camping is a great adventure. Ham Radio is a great hobby. Com- bining the two is an ideal combina- tion! With a little guidance you can be up and running with portable radio communications in your RV that you can use to protect yourself and your family with highly reli- able communications no matter how remote and isolated you are... and it does this all without the need for telephone networks, inter- net connections and other commu- nications services! As RVers we like camping in and exploring the most remote and secluded areas. But these areas are also the furthest away from good telephone coverage, internet ac- cess, public and emergency ser- vices. With this amazing adventure comes the risk of being unable to contact support services if you, your friends or family do have an emergency. Ham radio is the ideal solution to provide a simple way to communicate from your RV that you can use to easily make a con- nection to a nearby town, across the country or around the world. I often receive questions like: "Why do I need Ham Radio when I have a cell phone?" or "Didn't the internet kill Ham Radio?" While these modern forms of communi- cation may have shifted the atten- tion away from Ham Radio, by no means did it make it unnecessary. In fact, during a disaster it's very likely that these newer forms of communication will be the first ones to fail. The number one rea- son for preparedness minded RV campers to consider Ham Radio is its reliability during times of crisis. For decades this form of communi- cation continues to today to be the most reliable method of commu- nication. When all other forms of communication fail, Ham radio is always ready and has successfully served through every major crisis, disaster and emergency situation around the world with flying colors. In addition to safety and security, amateur radio is a great way to learn new things, meet people, and have fun while you are traveling. As I travel place to place I'll listen in or chat with friendly people on 2 meters to find out more about the area, learn about local attractions, and find out what events might be happening in the area. As a travel- ing RVer, when I want to use a cell phone there are many times there simply is no service but I have never had that problem with my ham radio and I've met so many wonderful people along the way. If you would like to know more about how you can learn about and use amateur radio to enhance your RV lifestyle with safety, security and fun for yourself, your friends and your family just stop by and visit the Quartzsite Amateur Radio Association at one of our regular events. We'd love to see you. To learn more visit our website at www.QRadio.org or email us at info@QRadio.org.
