In the end, the Chargers got their 29th victory in a row and took another step towards a return to a state championship in 3AA, winning 31-21. The running machine, Tre Harbison of Crest, ran the ball in the endzone three times before halftime. He would end up with around 170 yards of rushing on the night. Chargers Ouarterback - Willie Green threw the ball effectively to some eight receivers and fi nished with over 250 yards through the air. Special teams for Crest were important. This included securing an onside kick by Cuthbertson earlier in the contest and later blocking a punt that came when the Chargers lead was only 24-21. Crest improved to 13-0 on the season and advances to the 3rd round as the 2nd overall seed in the West. They will next host Weddington at Syd Bryson Stadium this week. Weddington, the 6th seed, knocked off 3rd seed AC Reynolds. KINGS MOUNTAIN MOUNTAINEERS: There's something to be said about being a part of the level of high school football in Cleveland County. Just like Crest and Shelby, Kings Mountain has advanced to the third round of the play- offs in the state and did so by eliminating the overall #1 seed in the west. That's right, the 3 single-A (West) top seed, Freedom, is gone thanks to another gutsy defensive performance by the Mountaineers. Located in nearby Morganton, Freedom would only get one score on the night in Kings Mountain's 21-6 victory. Freedom, much in part because of Ala- bama bound Runningback BJ Emmons, was averaging over 50 points per game. However, Emmons only accomplished 28 yards rushing against Kings Mountain's defense on the night. The Mountaineers defense also created turnovers and helped their team end Freedom's 11 game winning streak. Scoring contributors for KM, included Chance Fredrick and Darian McClain. The day after Thanksgiving will be extra special for the 11-2 / 8th seed Mountaineers, who get to host their next playoff game at John Gamble Stadium vs. 12th seed Hibriten. PLAYOFF EDITION PLAYOFF EDITION SHELBY GOLDEN LIONS: When you're the defending State 2A Champion (two years in a row) and trying to return for a third, you better believe you are going to take everyone's best shot. Shelby, however, made it look fairly easy after ad- vancing last Friday 34-9 to Winston-Salem Carver in second round play. The Golden Lions defense gave up a touchdown and a fi eld goal in the fi rst 15 minutes of the contest, but never allowed another point the rest of the way. Dax Hollifi eld continues to draw attention, as he now has an amazing 165 tackles this season alone. After missing Shelby's fi rst round playoff game due to an injury suffered in the Crest game, Quarterback Darquez Lee returned and had a very successful night. Lee would connect on pass plays for scores to Antwan Wright (71 yards), Darius Fuller, and the always reliable Jayden Borders. Backup QB Jwan Sims even came in to relief Lee at one point and also connected with Borders on a TD pass. The leading rusher for Shelby was Xavier Brooks, which included an over 60 yard touchdown run. The overall top seed in the west, the Golden Lions (12-1), host Mount Pleasant, the 12th seed, this Friday at Blanton Memorial Stadium. Mt. Pleasant upset 4th seed Hendersonville.
