Other times, Medicare beneficiaries receive fright- ening post cards that lead them to believe they will lose their benefits if they don't respond and provide personal information. Beware of products that seem too good to be true; they usually are. And if someone is using scare tac- tics to get you to buy some- thing or share your personal information, you may be the target of a Medicare scam. Every day, there are peo- ple coming up with ways to defraud the Medicare system and its beneficiaries. They may call you on the phone, come to your home unan- nounced or send you infor- mation through the mail or email. How can you protect yourself? Do not give anyone personal information such as your Medicare number, Social Security number, or banking and financial information. Medicare will not call you and ask you to verify your claim number for them. If someone claims to be from Medicare and calls you to verify your claim number, it's a scam! When you do have to pro- vide your Medicare card, such as at a visit to your medical provider, turn the card face down to hand to the recep- tionist so no one else can see your number or capture your number with their camera phone. If you suspect Medicare fraud or a scam, you should contact your local Senior Medicare Patrol Program. The North Carolina Senior Medicare Patrol Program is housed within the North Carolina Department of Insurance's Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program. The purpose of the Senior Medicare Patrol pro- gram is to provide Medicare fraud prevention education and counseling to the 1.7 mil- lion Medicare beneficiaries in North Carolina. NCSMP operates a toll- free, confidential consum- er line, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you suspect you have been a victim of Medicare fraud or a scam, call 1-855-408- 1212 today. Together we can empower Medicare benefi- ciaries to prevent health care fraud. Medicare Beneficiaries: Don't become a victim of a scam It is hard to Believe that Christmas is just around the corner. With Christmas comes the tacky Christmas sweater. Join the Neal Senior Center on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 for Tacky Sweater Day as we honor those tacky sweaters. Wear your finest tacky sweater. Prizes will be awarded dur- ing lunch. Doors open at 11:30 am. Tacky Christmas Sweater Day After the death or divorce of a spouse, one deals not only with personal bereavement, but also with new dilemmas in almost every aspect of life. Employment, financial and legal affairs, housing arrange- ments, and even meal prepara- tion are all situations that pres- ent new challenges. In handling these altered circumstances, many people around the country are finding an important source of support and guidance in voluntary sup- port programs, which put them in touch with others who have themselves, experienced similar situations. The Cleveland County Council on Aging/Senior Center has a Ladies Support Group for ladies 55 years or better. This group provides a variety of programs that deal with such topics as caring for your car, depression, cooking for one, self-protection and health information. It is a great way to learn new things and socialize with people in your community. Coping with life after the death or divorce of a loved one becomes even more difficult as one realizes and deals with unfamiliar activities and loneli- ness. We welcome you to come and experience the camarade- rie with this wonderful group of ladies. They meet month- ly for educational, social and recreation events. The Ladies Support Group meets the sec- ond Tuesday of each month at the Senior Center at 11:30 for lunch and a program. For further information please call Kathy Cobb at the Senior Center at 704-482-3488. Ladies Support The cost for medical equipment can be pretty high, especially if you only need the equipment for a short period of time. The Senior Center has some medical equipment that can be loaned to seniors in Cleveland County. We have wheelchairs, potty chairs and walkers that can be loaned out. If you, or someone you know, need any of this equipment, and you know that you are going to need it for a short time you can con- tact the Services Department at 482-3488 for more infor- mation. If you would like to donate medical equip- ment to The Senior Center, please contact the Services Department at 704-482- 3488. Neal Senior Center Medical Equipment Available 139 E.
