E-mail: wilkmic3@msu.edu L et's talk for a moment about charity. Looking back over the three years I spent in the fraternity, raising money for charity was a regular event. Like all of you, we were tasked to find ways to give back, and to turn a common event into a way to raise money to donate to a cause. It became such a regular practice that when we, as well as other fraternities and sororities, held an event, it was an assumption that the proceeds would be donated. These lessons I have carried with me, as I'm sure others have as well. These experiences, and the mentorship from older brothers in Michigan Gamma, would have been difficult to learn simply by attending college. In fact, a few of the charities that I now donate to began from my understanding of them in the fraternity. Here are a few impressive facts I found on Greekadvisors.com: • There are over 9 million Greek members nationally. • Of the nation's 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by fraternity men. • 85% of the Fortune 500 executives belong to a fraternity. • 40 of 47 U.S. Supreme Court justices since 1910 were fraternity men. • 76% of all congressmen and senators belong to a fraternity. • Every U.S. president and vice president, except two in each office, born since the first social fraternity was founded in 1825, have been members of a fraternity. • 63% of the U.S. President's cabinet members since 1900 have been Greek. • A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non-fraternity/ sorority persons graduate. • Over 85% of the student leaders on some 730 campuses are involved in the Greek community. • All of the Apollo 11 astronauts are Greek. • The Greek system is the largest network of volunteers in the U.S., with members donating more than 10 million hours of volunteer service each year. • As alumni, Greeks give approximately 75% of all money donated to universities. • And, finally, over $7 million is raised each year by Greeks nationally. By supporting Sigma Alpha Epsilon, not only do alumni have the ability to give back to future brothers, we allow for philanthropy to occur with the activities that active brothers, both underclassmen and alumni, put toward charities.
