"Jim" Owens, GU 528, Hopes to Enhance Fraternal, College Experience J ames W. Owens, GU 528, was from a small town and saw NCSU as a brave new world. He felt unprepared for college, but once he met the men of Lambda Chi he felt that he had found a new home and grew in the brotherhood. "I don't know how much polish I gained from the LXA experience, but certainly it helped me. The Chapter helped me mature socially, and gave me leadership experience and a stronger sense of responsibility. Along with the camaraderie from brothers, those aspects resulted in a very positive experience," shared Jim. After graduating with a degree in textiles in 1968, Jim stayed at NCSU for graduate school, earning a Ph.D. in economics. He began work at Caterpillar as a corporate economist in 1972, and held numerous management positions that allowed him to travel and live overseas in Europe and Asia. Jim eventually served as Caterpillar's CEO through 2004-10. He was also chairman of the U.S Business Council in 2009 and 2010, and has been an economic advisor to President George W. Bush and President Barrack Obama. Jim has recently reengaged with the University by serving as a trustee. He values having a rich diversity on campus, and believes that Gamma Upsilon Chapter adds to that diversity, which is why he chose to support the capital campaign. "I have met a number of the undergraduate brothers, and their rating on campus (GPA, number of pledges, and support for charitable causes) is very impressive. I am enthusiastic about supporting this project, and know that alumni working on this project are very committed to its success. "I see this as a gift to the University and future brothers. I want to help to establish Lambda Chi Alpha at NCSU to be successful so that it can influence young men for years to come." (Continued on page 4) I n the short three years since the recolonization of Gamma Upsilon Chapter, we have seen immense growth and success. When I joined the colony in the fall of 2012, there were 30 Chapter members and we were just beginning to find our way on campus. What we lacked in size and experience, we made up for in strong brotherhood and a dedication to success. We attribute much of our success to the support of our alumni. With your help we have grown and improved to become one of the strongest fraternities on campus. Upon recolonizing at NC State, our goal was to grow, improve, and achieve charter status. While our Fraternity was strong, our achievements did not take off until the fall 2013 Rechartering Banquet. Nearly 300 undergraduates and alumni attended the banquet at the Cardinal Club in downtown Raleigh, and the undergraduate brothers announced that we would be moving back to Greek Court in spring of 2014. After seeing the amazing support of alumni of all ages, we were ecstatic. During the following summer, a committee of undergraduates and alumni worked to build a Undergraduates and Alumni Share Success Gamma Upsilon Chapter Prepares to Become Top Chapter Nationally (Continued on page 4) Contact Evan Jones '14 at emjones5@ncsu.edu and Cory Wade '13 at cjwade@ncsu.edu to get involved with the campaign.
