You were going through your daily routine and suddenly in just a brief moment the world as you knew it would be altered forever. It could be a phone call in the middle of the night, a knock on the door or a doctor giving you the news, but there is no doubt that the news of the death of a loved one will change your life. At fi rst you say to yourself, "surely someone has made a mistake, it can't be true." We hold on to the last thread of our own reality and then comes the painful truth. "They are really gone." Emotional numbness begins to fl ood our world, we can't think straight. We begin to bargain with God and in our hearts we are screaming, "Why is this happening to me?" In the midst of our sadness, we begin to prioritize life. What was important to us just a few minutes ago doesn't seem that needful anymore. Our vision of the world and its value system is clearer than it has ever been. Our jobs, possessions and daily pursuits seem so trivial compared to what has just happened. Self- imposed guilt begins to take over, "I should have sent that card, or called more often." We lose our appetite for those things we once craved. The minutes seem like hours and days turn into months. The world has literally stopped spinning. The idea of living another day is like climbing Mount Everest. Our despondency turns into depression and we wonder, "Is this ever going to end?" All the while your soul is gasping for oxygen. With that gasping for hope, comes a ray of sunshine. The pain is still there but its throbbing subsides long enough for you to realize that life and living are still there. Sometimes you make yourself do what needs to be done, and with each step of purpose comes a new reality that life can be good again. You will never forget the day that your world changed, but with each new day comes the opportunity to honor the one you loved by living your life with faith, hope and love. You will learn to walk again. It just takes time and courage, but it will happen.
