Shelby Optimist Club Salute Law Enforcement Shelby Optimist Club President Roger Wuest greets some law en- forcement offi cers and thanks them for their service at the annual "Re- spect The Law Cookout" held at Optimist Park. The annual Shelby Optimist cookout was held on June 17th to recog- nize local law enforcement offi cers. The cookout's theme was "Respect The Law" and featured grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. Several of the offi cers showed up around 6:30 p.m. and had just come from escorting the Charleston, South Carolina prisoner to the airport and they were glad it was over. When asked how many cars went to the airport for the detail, the answer was 10. The special cookout seemed even more meaningful and appropriate because of the day's events. It was a worthy day to salute the law enforcement offi cers for a "job well done". Offi cers pictured (l-r) are Will Stroupe, Mark Blanton, Derek Toney, Jonathon Sperling, Billy Byers, and Jonathan Conner. Andrews On Monday, June 22, the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County held a "Bike Rodeo" to teach the "rules of the road" and proper ways of riding and handling a bike. Through a generous grant from United Healthcare, 50 bikes were given to the club. In addition to the bikes, 50 helmets and other prizes were included. Through a partnership with SafeKids and the Shelby Police Department there was a demonstration of bike safety and helmet fitting for all. It was held in the parking lot of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 502 West Sumter Street in Shelby. Joshua Propst, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club was very appreciative with the generous grant from United Healthcare. He felt it was an "excellent compliment to our Boys & Girls Club's goal of child safety and pro- moting "Health Lifestyles" for all kids." The Marine Corps League Foothills Detachment and Burns High School FFA members helped assemble the bikes for the kids. –M. A. Andrews Our Office Will Be Closed Friday July 3
