The team made the announcement Tuesday. The sides had an agree- ment last week pending a physical. The 38-year-old Colon, a former A's nemesis during his four- year stint with the AL West rival Angels from 2004-07, went 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA in 29 appear- ances and 26 starts last year for the New York Yankees in his 14th big league season. He won the 2005 AL Cy Young Award. Last month, the A's traded away starter Trevor Cahill to Arizona and All- Star lefty Gio Gonzalez to the Nationals. Oakland also sent All-Star closer Andrew Bailey to the Red Sox on Dec. 28. On Jan. 16, the A's acquired out- fielder Seth Smith from Colorado in a swap that sent right-hander Guiller- mo Moscoso and left- hander Josh Outman to the Rockies. They were two other potential starters. ''We thought it was important to find another veteran starting pitcher who could give the group of younger arms a little breathing room as a num- ber of them work toward making their first opening day rotation in the big leagues,'' assistant gener- al manager David Forst said. 6 p.m. Red Bluff's Lily Brose drives to the basket,Tuesday, against Oroville. By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Lady Spartans played like a soon-to- be hibernating bear, Tuesday night, in a 51- 45 win over Oroville. They stored up just enough points over the first three quarters to get them through a basket-starving fourth. Ashley Brown scored 21 and Lily Brose had 18 points as the Lady Spartans led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, before their hot shooting disappeared. Red Bluff went without a field goal in the final frame and relied on just four Brose free throws to fend off Oroville's comeback. Ashley and Brittney Jenkins combined for four consecutive 3-pointers to pull the Lady Tigers within five points down the stretch, but the Spartans got the stops they needed to in the final minutes. Both teams shot the lights out in the first quarter as Oroville led 21-15. Red Bluff's zone defense slowed down Oroville in the second quarter and the Lady Spartans outscored their visitors 17-4 to take the lead. Lottie Jones had four points for Red Bluff. Jessica Macdonald, Alana Hinkston and Mariah Smith had two each. Rachel Ward and Cori Schatz made a free throw. Giants, Lincecum reach 2-year agreement SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum and the San Fran- cisco Giants reached a ver- bal agreement Tuesday on a two-year contract worth $40.5 million. The deal includes a $500,000 signing bonus and salaries of $18 million this year and $22 million in 2013, a person familiar with the agreement said Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the terms were not announced. Lincecum still must take a physical, which the Giants hope will happen early next week to complete the deal. Lincecum had asked for a near-record $21.5 million in salary arbitration and had been offered $17 million by the club. He remains eligible for free agency following the 2013 season. The 27-year-old right- hander, the winning pitcher in the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas in 2010, earned $13.1 million last season when he finished a two-year deal worth $23.2 million. When the sides exchanged numbers last Tuesday, Lincecum's request neared the record amount sought in arbitra- tion. Houston pitcher Roger Clemens asked for $22 mil- lion in 2005. San Francisco's offer was the highest in arbitration his- tory, topping the $14.25 mil- lion the New York Yankees proposed for shortstop Derek Jeter in 2001. As Giants vice president Bobby Evans expected, they found common ground around the midpoint of the figures — and did so in only a week. San Francisco's front office had hoped to lock up Lincecum and fellow starter Matt Cain with long-term deals, though Lincecum seemed set on keeping his options open in the near future on a shorter contract. A call to the pitcher was not immediately returned and his agent declined to com- ment. With Lincecum earning a hefty contract, Evans joked last week, ''I usually leave off the final three zeroes because it's easier to calcu- late.'' In February 2010, Lince- cum agreed to a $23 million, two-year contract ahead of the scheduled hearing. He had been set at that time to ask for $13 million. That last contract was quite a raise for the under- sized, hard-throwing pitcher his teammates call ''Fran- chise'' and ''Freak'' after he earned $650,000 in 2009. Lincecum — the 10th overall draft pick out of Washington in 2006 — has been an All-Star in each of the past four seasons. He went 13-14 with a 2.74 ERA last year for his first losing record. The Giants scored no runs while he was in the game in seven of 33 starts, had one run six times and two runs five times, accord- ing to STATS LLC. The hiring was first reported by Fox Sports and ESPN, with both outlets saying final details were still being worked out Tuesday night. The Raiders had no immediate comment on the reports. New general manager Reggie McKenzie decided on his new coach exactly two weeks after he was hired. He imme- diately fired Hue Jackson, who went 8-8 in his only season as coach, and began the search. McKenzie interviewed Philadelphia offensive coordina- tor Marty Mornhinweg, former Miami interim coach Todd Bowles, New Orleans offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. and Green Bay assistants Winston Moss and Dom Capers. With McKenzie having spent almost two decades with the Packers, his former colleagues in Green Bay were orig- inally considered to be the favorites. But instead he went with the 39-year-old Allen, coming off his first season in the NFL as a coordinator. Allen had his second interview with McKenzie on Tuesday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Allen will be the first new Raiders coach to come from the defensive side of the ball since late owner Al Davis hired linebackers coach John Madden before the 1969 sea- son. Madden won 103 games in 10 seasons and won Oak- land's first Super Bowl following the 1976 season. After Madden retired, Davis exclusively hired offensive coaches: Tom Flores, Mike Shanahan, Art Shell, Mike White, Joe Bugel, Jon Gruden, Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Shell again, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable and Jackson. Allen will be Oakland's seventh coach since the 2003 season in his first head coaching job at any level. The Raiders have not had a winning record or made the playoffs since Calla- han took them to the Super Bowl following the 2002 sea- son. There have been plenty of changes for the Raiders since Davis died Oct. 8. His son, Mark, took over the team and hired McKenzie after the season to take over many of the on-field and personnel decisions that Al Davis had made during his nearly half-century with the organization. Davis also was heavily involved in the defensive schemes with some people referring to him as the de facto ''defensive coordinator.'' In his first season as coordinator in Denver, Allen helped the Broncos improve from allowing a league-worst 29.4 points and 390.8 yards per game to ranking 20th in yards (357.8) and 24th in points (24.4) this season on the way to an AFC West title. The Broncos increased their sack total from 23 to 41 and were tied for the sixth-most blitzes on pass plays in the league this season, according to STATS LLC. Allen had served as New Orleans' secondary coach the previous five seasons and had also coached for Atlanta. He runs a 4-3 defense, which the Raiders have used the past seven seasons. The Raiders, however, struggled mightily on defense this past season despite giving big contracts in the offsea- son to Richard Seymour, Kamerion Wimbley and Stanford Routt. Oakland had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history. Oakland joined this year's Tampa Bay team as two of the four teams to allow at least 30 TD passes and 5.0 yards per carry in a season, a distinction achieved previously by only the 1950 Baltimore Colts and 1952 Dallas Texans. The Raiders also became the sixth team since the 1970 merger to allow at least 2,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards passing in a season. 0 1 Sports Brown and Brose lead Red Bluff to league win over Oroville 1B Wednesday January 25, 2012 Reports: Raiders to hire Allen as new head coach Maggie Keller St. Elizabeth Sports Medicine Team congratulates the Athletes of the Week!
