WOULD APPROVE OF! Article Provided By: Cindy Adair The day begins at 4:00pm with a traditional patriotic walking parade with buntings in the shop windows welcoming all to our wonderful town. The kids are riding in wagons, strollers, bicycles and tricycles strewn with red, white and blue streamers. In addition, Uncle Sam, Veterans and members of the police and fi re departments will march and wave to a cheering crowd. According to Cindy Adair, Director of Rutherford Town Revitalization which hosts Freedom Fest, "For many of our residents, the walking parade is their favorite part of the day and it's guaranteed to bring a tear even to the most stalwart eye. If you just can't get your fi ll of small town Americana, stay the day and enjoy watermelon and pie eating contests and traditional competitions like a three-legged race, balloon toss and cornhole. There will also be infl atables, face painting and activities for kids of all ages. But why should kids have all the fun? Rutherfordton's adult only soapbox derby is the only one of its kind in the region and begins at 5:00 right on Main Street. Come enjoy the hilarious completion as they careen down Main Street. Race organizers will carefully pick two equally matched cars to compete in side by side heats until a winner is declared. Rutherfordton is known for its wonderful festival food and great music and Freedom Fest will have all your favorites including smoothies, hotdogs, barbeque, kettle corn and more. If you need to cool off our local restaurants will be open to serve you. Our downtown shops will have great specials to celebrate this holiday. Blues Underground and Shotgun Fox will provide music to tap your toes beginning at 6:30. This year's fi reworks display will begin at dusk. We would like to thank all our sponsors who made this possible. There will be plenty of free parking directly off Main Street. There will be plenty of vantage points throughout downtown to view fi reworks including the Courthouse Lawn and Toms Street and organizers encourage you to come early to participate in all the day's activities and secure your place to watch the show.
