Photo Credit: ©ErikOlsen. Jumping from 8,000 feet above Tryon International Equestrian Center, the Special Forces Association Parachute Team captured a patriotic tribute of 10,000 spectators celebrating TIEC's grand opening event on Saturday, June 6, 2015. Strapped with Go-Pro helmet cameras, the parachute team, carrying the American fl ag, descended gracefully into the TIEC arena as Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Lee Greenwood sang his legendary hit, "God Bless the U.S.A." The grand opening festivities were anchored by the equestrian center's $210,000 Governor's Cup Grand Prix, presented by Rolex, and the competition aired the following day nationwide on "NBC Sports Network." From the moment people stepped onto the property, a fl urry of ongoing entertainment ensued. Eclectically-clad stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians and aerial artists welcomed guests who then chose between attending a craft beer festival, dining in the many restaurants or shopping along vendor row. Kids enjoyed free face painting, carousel rides and airbrush tattoos. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory welcomed the packed arena to the $210,000 Governor's Cup Grand Prix, and Mark Bellissimo, managing partner of Tryon Equestrian Partners, followed with the unveiling of the elite, four-sided Rolex Clock Tower. "On behalf of the state of North Carolina, I want to thank you for having the vision, which you could have had anywhere in the United States," said McCrory to Bellissimo and partners. "You could have been in Florida, you could have been in Georgia, you could have been in South Carolina; but you found a piece of property and you found a group of local offi cials — both Polk County, Rutherford County and the Tryon area — who said we want to work with you and build a long-term relationship." Next, an already enthusiastic crowd went wild as they watched the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes televised live on the TIEC Jumbo-Tron where American Pharaoh became the Triple Crown Champion after a 37-year drought. In addition, fourteen of the 24 fi nalists were randomly selected for the Great Charity Challenge of the Carolinas competition, TIEC's inaugural fundraising event born out of the same event in Wellington, F.L. The 14 fi nalists will each be paired with an equestrian team that will compete for a minimum purse of $250,000 during the competition to be hosted at TIEC in October. A complete list of charities will be released soon. The evening concluded with Richie Moloney (IRL) and Carrabis Z sealing the $210,000 Tryon Grand Prix win for the Governor's Cup presented by Rolex. The duo fi nished in 36.957 seconds in front of Ali Wolff (USA) and Casall who completed the jump-off track in 37.812 seconds. Charlie Jayne (USA) and Chill R Z fi nished in third, crossing the timers in 38.422 seconds. The Tryon Spring Series concluded on Sunday, June 7 with the $34,000 FEI Tryon 1.50m Challenge. The Tryon Summer Series will begin on June 24, hosting four weeks of consecutive FEI competition.
