According to the Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, the
certifi cation was made following the request made by a food
business company worldwide leader, in order to certify their
products without GMOs through an offi cial channel. So far
the name of the company that made the request has not been
released.
Genetically modifi ed foods have features like the ability to
withstand the herbicides. Most soybean and corn crops in the
country are transgenic and are intended for animal feed but
also as ingredients in processed foods for human consumption.
The US government says that GMOs are completely safe, and
given the principle of substantial equivalence does not need to
be identifi ed.
Vilsack said the certifi cation will be announced soon
and that other big companies are already lining up on this
initiative.
