he Department of Agriculture of the United States
(USDA) announced that it has developed the first
government label to certify foods that do not
contain genetically modified ingredients.
This label will not end the debate on this
type of food, which according to scientists
in general, are safe for humans, although the
general public believes otherwise. However,
analysts suggest the label could set a national
standard for the certification and labeling of
foods that do not contain genetically modified
ingredients, known as GMO.
According to the Department of
Agriculture, certification would be voluntary
and companies would have to pay for it. If
approved, these foods may bear a label that
says "USDA Process Verified", along with a
statement confirming that it does not contain
any GMO.
Although today consumers can already find
foods with labels that certify that they are free
of GMO, they are not issued by the government,
since it is a private certification process developed
by the nonprofit organization Project No GMO.
