It truly takes a vil- lage; therefore, when psychological or physiological issues arise, the chaplain, with the permission of the soldier, will refer to those who can best help resolve the problem. Chaplains are very unique in re- gards to their relationship with their soldiers. Unlike their religious civilian counterparts, chaplains are completely submerged in the military and its cul- ture. Soldiers and their families per- ceive the chaplain as one of their own, rather than an outsider who cannot identify with their struggles. Although the experiences differ, chaplains are an organic part of the unit whom others see as symbiotic. We conduct physi- cal training with soldiers, jump out of planes with them and go to combat with them. Recall the 'ministry of presence' concept earlier; it is the 'presence' of the chaplain that provides the opportunity to build bridges with soldiers and to speak into their lives.
