Photo furnished For 8 years Special Olympics Cleve- land County has been the recipient of this tournament, which has raised more than $165,000.00 in the 8 years since its incep- tion. The tournament is held each year at Pinnacle Boat Landing in Lake Norman on the fi rst Saturday of November. Each year volunteers from Eaton Corporation and the Special Olympics Cleveland County Steering Committee run this event under the guidance of Rick Peace. Special Olympics Cleveland County is a non-profi t organization and operates solely on fundraising and donations. This is by far the largest fundraiser that is held to help our program operate each year. The local program currently has over 250 registered athletes with the youngest being 3 years old and the oldest is 71 years of age. There is no age limit and no athlete ever has to pay a fee to join a team. We currently have 16 sports that travel to area, regional, and state level events. To be eligible for travel, all ath- letes must fi rst compete at the local Spring Games. Without this tournament, the sponsors and volunteers that make it such a success Spe- cial Olympics Cleveland County would not be able to continue to provide sporting events at the same capacity that we currently provide. If you would like more information about this fundraiser or have any questions about Special Olympics Cleveland County please contact Carol Goforth at 704-487-9941 or by email at cagoforth@clevelandcountyschools. org. The Shelby City Park has now added lights at their Sports Complex, which allows them to have more games played at night. They had 12 teams playing on the three newly lighted fi elds last Tuesday evening. With the addition they have a total of seven fi elds, all located at the Park, allowing the Park to not have to use other fa- cilities for hosting games. Girls softball has already begun and baseball kicks off on Monday, May 4th. There's also a new concession stand and bathroom facility that will be ready by mid May if weather cooperates. All the Park's staff, the players and parents are excited about the new facilities and they plan to draw even more out of town teams to our community for tournaments. Be sure to go by the Park and checkout the new additions. Shelby City Park Offi ce Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30am until 5:30pm (except holi- days).
