The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County held its Annual Awards Banquet and program at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Shelby on Friday Evening, April 24. Board President Jack Weller was Master of Ceremonies for the evening which honored many of last year's volunteers, supporters and participants in the Club's pro- grams. Presenters and assistants for the evening were Jack Weller, Board Members Faye Burton and Bob Chadwick, Boys & Girls Club Program Director Mary Pass, Club Staff Keeynan Pharr, Jeannine Streeper, Volunteer Participant Tyler Perez and the Club Executive Director Joshua Propst The Youth of the Year Award was presented to six year Club mem- ber, Tori Owens. Tori is presently a junior at Shelby High School. She has a 4.2 GPA and her favorite sub- ject is History. She attends Bethel Baptist Church and is involved in the youth group and youth choir. Last summer she volunteered in the Club's Summer Day Camp Program in the Teen Camper Leadership Program. She is presently a Junior Staff Member at the Club working as a Peer Helper in the Power Hour Homework Help Program. Tori is the daughter of Michael and Cynthia Owens. The presentation of her award included a plaque to honor her achievement and a $100 gift cer- tificate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors. Boys & Girls Club Annual Awards Banquet Tori Owens "Youth of the Year" The opening reception for the annual Student Art Exhibit & Competition brought out the largest crowd this year to the Cleveland County Arts Council on Thursday, April 23rd. Both middle school and high school students participated in this very creative event. There were eight categories in which the students competed. You may also view their works in person at the Arts Council through May 21, Monday through Friday 9am to 5:30 pm. and Saturdays 10 am to 2 pm. His student Hattie Rose Padgett's "Vulnerability" took top prize! Brothers Marshall, 6, and Garrison, 3, took a break and rest from the activi- ties at the Foothills Merry Go Round Festival. Foothills Merry Go Round Festival At Shelby City Park The weather was not the most cooperative for the big two day event at the annual Merry Go Round Festival at Shelby City Park, but for those who braved the weather it was a lot of fun. The event was held on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday April 26th. Many new events were added this year. The YoYo ride was one the most popular rides at this year's Foothills Merry Go Round Festival.
