"Absolutely," he said. The retired chairman and CEO of Kroger attributes much of his success to the skills and values he developed as a member of the Alpha Xi Chapter. By living and working with Sigma Chis, he learned to coexist with others who had varying temperaments, talents, and convictions. "The fraternity was one of the experiences in college that significantly contributed to having whatever success I've had in a business environment," Dave said. "I practiced and learned a lot of skills early on that would later have to be applied. Some learning was the hard way, that is, I made many mistakes. But the mistakes you make at that stage are free (a lesson I learned at workshop)." During his formative undergraduate years, Dave learned how to respect and honor people who have different views than his own and how to develop a lasting bond despite those differences. Throughout his career, he has used those skills to interact and inspire many of Kroger's 375,000 associates. "It's a skillset you can't take a class on in college, but instead you have to figure out a way to learn it," he said. "I found Sigma Chi fraternity a great place to develop that skillset of how to live with people different than you and to get along in a productive way." After college, Dave devoted his career to the grocery industry. He retired in January and has since moved to Kansas City with his wife, Dee, to be closer to their three children and seven grandchildren. He serves on corporate boards for the Union Pacific Railroad, DirecTV, and the University of Kansas Hospital. He also guest lectures at the KU School of Business. Sigma Chi Provides Lasting Influence for Dave Dillon '73 Chapter Eternal Doug J. Oliver '73 entered Chapter Eternal on December 18, 2014. A celebration of Doug's life was held at Shadow Glen Country Club in Olathe, Kan., on December 27. Brother Monte Giddings '72 presided over the service, which included the White Rose Ceremony attended by more than 20 Sigs. Doug was from Newton, Kan., and attended Culver Military Academy from 1967-1969, where he met his future wife, Betsy. They went on to attend the University of Kansas together and were married on August 11, 1973. In 1983, he founded his own studio, which came to be known as Douglas Oliver Design Office. The studio did design work for Fortune 500 companies, major universities, institutions, and foundations across the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Over the years, his work garnered many prestigious awards and was chosen to be part of the Permanent Design Collection of the Library of Congress. Along with his wife of 41 years, Betsy, he is survived by his sons, Kyle and Bennett, daughter, Reilly, and grandson, Owen.
