The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 24, 2015 2 By Rory MacDonald- Gauthier TV Media I magine a world where you could show up to work when you wanted, wear whatever you wanted and an- swer only to your boss, who just so happens to be yourself. For many, this idea is but a dream, but for the the cast of "Silicon Valley," it's very much a reality. If you're looking to take a peek inside the world of the new-age workforce and booming technology empire, then you won't want to miss a new episode of "Silicon Val- ley," airing Sunday, April 26, on HBO. The show arguably paints the most accurate picture of the real world's Silicon Valley, a technology Mecca located in northern California that is home to thousands of start- ups and established empires, where you can be your own boss. It is in this high-tech re- gion where your own success is attributed to the amount of work that you alone put in, and it's reflected in many of the companies who make this valley their home. The likes of Facebook, Google and Apple are headquartered in Silicon Valley, where they all began establishing their businesses after the dot-com boom of the late '90s. The "Silicon Valley" series focuses on the daily ins and outs of the modern-day gold rush through software and application development. The show revolves around a group of young engineers and cod- ers who founded their own startup tech company, Pied Piper. As with all new compa- nies, Pied Piper faces routine problems — funding, brand- ing, polishing its product to ensure its success and, of course, dealing with others trying to steal its idea. A lot of the material for the show comes from very real ex- perience. Executive producer and co-creator Mike Judge, known for his cult classic "Of- fice Space" (1999), knows what it's like to be knee deep in the trials of a burgeoning company. Judge, who began his career in Silicon Valley with a now-defunct video card company, joked at the season 2 premiere of the show earlier this month that things have come full circle in his career. "A long time ago, I was ac- tually an engineer in Silicon Valley," he said. "I was an en- gineer dreaming of becoming a comedy filmmaker in Holly- wood, and now, here I am do- ing a show called 'Silicon Val- ley.' As we do this show, I keep thinking I really should be dreaming of going back to Sil- icon Valley and coming up with a stupid app and becom- ing a billionaire and maybe buying a network or some- thing. But, I remind myself that making fun of them is a lot funner." It's that mentality alone that makes "Silicon Valley" so great. With a show that re- volves around technology and long-winded algorithms, be- ing accurate while also hu- morous is a task in and of it- self. Judge met with engi- neers, founders of reputable companies and investors alike in order to gain an even better understanding of the industry. Amongst them was Marc An- dreessen, co-author of Mosa- ic, the first commonly used web browser. Upon meeting Andreessen, Judge told "Ya- hoo! Finance" that the found- er of Netscape told him "for the next hour I'm going to be a writer on your show" and proceeded to unleash an on- slaught of ideas for the up- coming season.Viewed as the modern-day gold rush, the technology startup sector of northern California's Silicon Valley is a prime location for those looking to make their mark in technology advance- ment. For a witty look into the roller-coaster ride of an engi- neer's life from someone who's been there, be sure to check out a new episode of "Silicon Valley" airing Sunday, April 26,on HBO. Robynwood Home 2 x 2 coverstory Thomas Middleditch as seen in "Silicon Valley" Start me up: 'Silicon Valley' delves into California's bustling technology sector By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Who played Poseidon in "Once Upon a Time"? He looked really familiar to me. A: Having mastered the busting of ghosts, Ernie Hudson took to television to try busting fairy-tale characters. Hudson, who played a villainous version of the Greek sea god Poseidon on ABC's "Once Upon a Time" a few weeks ago, is best known by just about everyone for hav- ing played Winston Zeddmore in the modern classic "Ghostbusters" (1984) and its 1989 sequel. But it's possible you remember him from elsewhere. He's done dozens of film and TV roles since hanging up his proton pack (that's the gun-like weapon the Ghost- busters used to catch ghosts). His next biggest role was as warden Leo Glynn on the gritty (that is to say, frequently profane and violent) pris- on drama "Oz" on HBO. His other notable roles include playing Sandra Bullock's FBI boss in the "Miss Congenial- ity" movies (2000 and 2005) and another lawman, Sgt. Albrecht, in the cult-classic "The Crow" (1994). Q: Is it true they're making another Rocky movie? Isn't Stallone getting a little old to be boxing? A: While it's technically true that another Rocky movie is in the works, it's the first one to not actually be called "Rocky," and Sylvester Stallone's iconic character won't be the guy getting punched in the ring. Stallone will play boxer Rocky Balboa, but he's there as mentor to a young boxer named Adonis Creed, the grand- son of his old adversary, Apollo. In keeping with the se- ries' tradition of title creativity, the film will be called "Creed." The other star of the film will be Michael B. Jordan as Adonis. The 28-year-old actor has already made a name for himself, having starred in the critically acclaimed TV series "Friday Night Lights," and won numerous acting awards for his turn in hit 2013 indie film "Fruitvale Sta- tion." He has also signed on to play Johnny Storm in the upcoming "Fantastic Four" movie. "Creed" is currently filming and is slated for release in November of this year. Some photos have already leaked out from the set, and they show the two actors revisiting a lot of the old scenes from the old Rocky movies. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com.
