Page 3 The DelTa Chi eDuCaTional FounDaTion Forrest Hoglund, Kansas '56, Gives Back to Ensure Delta Chi Remains Strong D elta Chi is dedicated to building great men; men who will be distinguished in their chosen careers, leaders in their communities, and who will be known for their legacies in philanthropy and service. Forrest Hoglund, Kansas '56, exemplifies such a Delta Chi. Although he began his Delta Chi journey as an undergraduate, he was familiar with the fraternity prior to even arriving at the University of Kansas. His older brother, Barton Hoglund, Kansas '55, was already a Delta Chi, so Forrest had already witnessed firsthand that it was an excellent organization. As he went through recruitment and got to know the men in the chapter, he was even more convinced that it was the right fraternity for him. During his undergraduate years, Forrest served as an "A" in the Kansas Chapter and learned many important lessons and leadership skills that have influenced him throughout his personal and professional life. Valuing these lessons, Forrest recognized the significance of leaving the Fraternity stronger than when he joined. He feels this is equally relevant today and is one of the many reasons he continues to give back to the Kansas Chapter and the Delta Chi Educational Foundation. In 1996, due to his many years of dedicated leadership and service to Delta Chi, Forrest was presented with the Delta Chi of the Year award. He feels that is was a great honor to receive such a distinction from the Fraternity. When Steve Michels, Marquette '87, issued the three-year "A"s' Academy Challenge, with a goal of raising $420,000 to support the academy, Forrest knew how important it was to meet the goal. He recognizes that the "A"s' Academy is a premier leadership program that teaches young Delta Chis across the country imperative leadership skills. He notes that because there weren't any programs that provided leadership training and guidance back when he was an undergraduate, the responsibilities of being an "A" was much more difficult. "The "A"s' Academy fills a definite need for the Fraternity. Strong leadership is needed in each of the chapters, and this program helps develop and facilitate that leadership." Based on this, he made a three-year pledge of $50,000 to the program. After graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in mechanical engineering, Forrest enjoyed a distinguished career in the natural gas industry, including many years in top management with Exxon, Texas Oil and Gas, and EOG Resources. He retired in 1999, and he and his wife, Sally, divide their time between their two residences in Dallas and Houston, Texas. They are actively involved in their community, providing philanthropy and guidance to numerous organizations. MAKING A DIFFERENCE ON AN INTERNATIONAL SCALE P romote friendship, develop character, advance justice, and assist in the acquisition of a sound education." This is Delta Chi's mission and it is what Andrew R. Haggerty, New Mexico State '03, has been helping sponsor through the Delta Chi Educational Foundation. Andrew credits Delta Chi with molding him into the successful man he is today. It helped him build character and leadership skills. As a result of serving as his chapter's "A," "B," "AMC," and philanthropy chairman, he learned the importance of focusing on the bigger picture and developed an emphasis on leadership and service. These lessons have remained with him, and, with his love and dedication to New Mexico State Chapter, led him to serve on the chapter's house corporation in 2004, the year after he graduated. He treasures the years he spent in Delta Chi, and in return, he has done everything he can to give back to the Fraternity as a whole. He notes, "You get out of it what you put into it." Andrew has been to every Delta Chi International Conference since the year 2000. It was at one of these conventions that he learned about the Delta Chi Educational Foundation. He immediately knew it was an organization he wanted to support. He recognized that the scholarships and programs made a difference in men's lives on a international scale. All Delta Chi chapters benefitted. Andrew quickly became a monthly donor. "Being a recurring donor is a no-brainer for me. It's a simple process that allows me to give to something I care about. Plus, I can plan it into my budget and not have to worry about it." Andrew and his wife, Melissa, live in El Paso, Texas, with their children, Alexandria (9), Erin (7), and Liam (3). Andrew owns four real estate companies and was elected in November 2014 as a county commissioner for El Paso County, Texas. www.dcef.com
