the warmth of the sun, and then she does a
simple explanation of photosynthesis. "Can
you believe they eat cow poo?" she asks as
she talks about organisms in the soil, and the

Some of the best moments come when
a person in town walks up to her and asks
if she's Tara. "Almost always there's a story,"
she says. She recalls one involving an autistic
girl, who stayed in the truck while her mother
visited the farm store, but liked to watch the
chicks and eventually ventured out to hold
them. "It was such a big deal," says Smith.
"Things like that are fun for me, when people
say that they were helped in some way."

someday Smith hopes to write about her ex-
periences. She claims she'll blame Pollan and
Salatan in the dedication, but she says it with a
smile and a twinkle in her eye. Clearly, she's in
the right place. n
