ccording to a recent report, Americans consumed less
sodas in 2014, a trend that has continued over the
past 10 years while diet soda sales are declining even
more compared to regular sodas.
According to the annual report from Beverage Digest, a
fi rm that studies the beverage industry, the total volume of
soda consumed fell 0.9% last year, compared with a reduction
of 3% recorded in 2013.
The decrease in diet soda sales resulted in a change of the
10 most consumed beverages in the United States.
Even when people bought less Pepsi, it managed to move
Diet Coke from second place, which suffered a marked
decline. Diet Coke had taken second place in the hands of
Pepsi in 2010.
Coca Cola held a big lead as the most popular soda in the
US, selling nearly twice as Pepsi.
Beverage Digest attributed the moderate decrease of soda
in 2014 to the continued growth of energy drinks.
They also stressed that Coca Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper
Snapple Group have improved the marketing of their beverage
brands.
The volume of soda has been declining in the United States
since 2004 due to concerns that sugary drinks cause weight
gain, as well as the proliferation of alternatives in the beverage
industry. Experts have attributed the rapid decline of dietary
concerns about artifi cial sweeteners like aspartame in sodas.
The American Beverage Association, which represents
Coca Cola, Pepsi and others, attempts to address the decline in
popularity of diet drinks by funding studies that demonstrate
the benefi ts of such beverages.
