Spring 2015 Candlelight Beta Phi Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha • Purdue University Published by the Beta Phi Foundation A s you can imagine I have been working closely with Rich Russell '58 over the last several weeks and months learning and understanding the intricacies of the position. I am enjoying the challenge and looking forward to 2015 and beyond. We have a tremendous, dedicated team on the Foundation board that will keep me in line and continue to keep Beta Phi strong. While the Chapter House renovation is completed, we do still have pledges to fulfill to complete the entire process. Our alumni came through in a tremendous way to make this project successful. The immediate need to upgrade 629 University has been completed and thus the Foundation must turn its attention to the future. I ask that you all read the reports from the Chapter president, home association president, and Chapter advisor. You will be very impressed with what is happening at Beta Phi. We are driving for Chapter of Excellence and Smythe consideration in a way that I have not seen since the early 1980s. YOU, as our devoted alumni, have been no small part of the culture shift at Purdue. By donating your time and returning for Homecoming and alumni events, you demonstrate how important and precious Brotherhood is. Rich has turned his attention to a newly created long-term vision. I won't steal his thunder so please read his report to fully understand his project. The Foundation and Chapter must then look to our more immediate future. I promise that you will not see every report from me appealing to you for more financial support. In the last few years, the Foundation had suspended requesting annual donations to support our nor- mal, yearly operating expenses. However, mail- ings, database maintenance, alumni events, golf outings, Old Masters, etc. have costs associ- ated with them. We will continue to support all of these events, but we need your help. In the future you will receive requests for annual donations and I hope you will strongly consider some level of support. We have enough alumni that if everyone participated in a small way the Foundation would continue on solid ground for years to come. Please give this consideration. We have also seen a tremendous impact to the undergraduate commitment to excellence through attendance in Pike University, Regional Pike Conferences, and National Convention. The Foundation and Chapter have money in our budgets to help support those events. Now, we are seeing greater and greater numbers of under- graduates wanting to attend such events. With that thought in mind, when you think about an annual donation you can request it to be used in a particular way. Our last six Chapter presidents have attended the Pike Conferences. It is clear that what National is promoting is working. The greater number of active members we can help send, the more leaders we are helping create. I am honored to be the next Foundation president. Those of you that know me well will understand exactly what I mean when I say that I will strive to make Beta Phi even better and I am committed to the Chapter and all of you. I will work with the Foundation Board, the Home Association Board, the Alumni Advisory Committee, Chapter, and National tirelessly to make Beta Phi the best it can possibly be. With your continued support we will do just that. The ultimate goal is for Pi Kappa Alpha at Purdue University to continue to be the preeminent chapter on campus. If we do that, Smythes are bound to follow and our legacy will be remembered. Sincerely in ffka, Joe Conti '85 Beta Phi Foundation President joscon_61@yahoo.com Striving for Excellence with Continued Alumni Support Looking to a Strong Future for Beta Phi Ribbon cutting during the Chapter House Dedication.
