Alpha-Phi Zeta 3 Traditions to Last a Lifetime E very Lambda Chi experience is unique. For Fred Richards, Theta- Eta 741, his experience is a little more unique than most. He joined Lambda Chi Alpha at a small college and then decided to transfer to the University of Alabama. It was a big change and although he knew he wanted to affiliate with Alpha-Phi Zeta, he wasn't sure what it would bring. Looking back, he knows he wouldn't have it any other way. Alpha-Phi Zeta was a great group of guys that accepted him and made him a part of things from the very beginning. They made the transition much easier and gave him a place to belong at the University of Alabama. Memories of his time with Alpha-Phi Zeta are filled with fun and good times. One of his favorites in particular was performing with his brothers in "The Gong Show." He and several other Lambda Chi brothers performed a version of the song "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. Fred also recalls participating in their Luau social event every spring. When his son, Coleman Richards, AF1523, was in the Chapter he told Fred that Luau was still happening every year. Fred laughed at this and informed Coleman that while their Luau was probably plenty of fun, he feels it couldn't compare to the Luaus that Fred went to as an undergraduate. Another tradition that Fred still participates in every year is that of Alabama football. As undergraduates, the brothers of Alpha-Phi Zeta would attend the football games together cheering on Alabama. For the Birmingham games they would charter a bus and drive up together. Alabama football has remained a tradition for Fred and he goes to games every year. Fred is very proud of his experience with Lamda Chi, an experience that he is proud to share with his son. He feels that Lambda Chi has helped make him the successful man he is today. Fred's time in Alpha-Phi Zeta helped him learn how to function in a large group and collaborate. This in turn has had a large impact on his career and his involvement in various civic and community groups. Fred is a CPA and he and his wife, Susan, live in Madison, Missouri.
