Open all summer for local residents Thank you for another great winter! by Joanne Winer Last week, Tony and Cee headed home after a day at the Chamber, and as they drove into their driveway, they noticed that one of the goats that their grandchildren (who are into 4-H) had in their pen were standing up on top of one of their boxes. They were very agitated at something that was in the yard on the outside of their fence. To Cee's surprise, she walked around the corner and saw what could only be compared to a small dinosaur looking at her. After freaking out for the few minutes and trying to get Tony's at- tention to come over, she fi nally made it clear that he had to come see what was there bothering the goats. Tony went over and saw what can only be described as a huge lizard over 4 feet long. After corralling it with a rake, so it would not get under their house where it probably would take a huge effort to get it out, they called the fi re department. It turned out that Mark McGee, one of the fi refi ghters, knew that his neighbor's Iguana had escaped the night be- fore and they had been looking for it. They came over and picked up the huge creature and took it back to where it belonged. The owner, Lon, lives over near Moon Mountain Road, so the Iguana, named Lizzy, had traveled quite a ways to Tony's yard. Luckily she didn't get run over or hurt along the way. Appar- ently, she has full run of his garage, and the only window had a lock and dowel in it and a screen on the outside. Lizzy climbed up and knocked the stick out, reached up to the lock and pulled it down to open it, and pushed the screen out and escaped--smart lizard huh?? Needless to say, he has since screwed the window shut so she can't get out again. Lizzy is a green Iguana, and is nor- mally bright green--she is about 20 lbs, and can get bigger. In the photo she looks darker because they change col- ors to dark when they feel distressed or threatened. She was not happy to have her adventure cut short, especially when she saw the goats, chickens and ducks just across the fence. So now, she is back home and waiting for the new outdoor pen that Lon is building for her. He said he may have to even- tually donate her to a wildlife preserve, but has had her for 10 years and hopes to keep her for as long as he is able. Just hope if she ever gets loose again, someone will fi nd her before she gets hurt and returns her home. | S D M DEADLINE : WED.
