However, Relay for Life is the most successful community based fund- raising event of the American Cancer So- ciety. There are more than 5,000 Relay for Life events taken place across America and more than $5 billion raised by this vol- unteered based event. Communities come together to remember loved ones lost, hon- or cancer survivors and raise money to fi ght back against all types of Cancer. It is a cel- ebration of survivorship an occasion to ex- press hope and our goals to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people. I attended my very fi rst Relay For Life Help "Team Ollie" To Support Relay For Life And In Memory Of Alan Biggerstaff event in May of 2006. Not knowing what to expect, I walked into a huge crowd of people, lots of laughter, smiles, tears, banners and signs of those who were gone, loved ones that were currently battling cancer and those who had won the victory and beat the dreadful disease. I was amazed by all the love and support individuals had poured into the event. That night as I watched the survivors take their survivor walk, my heart skipped a beat. And in that moment I promised to always support this incredible organization. My father, Alan Biggerstaff was diagnosed with CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) in November of 2004. CLL is a type of cancer that starts from white blood cells in the bone marrow. It then invades the blood. In time, it invades other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. That's exactly what happened to my dad. The cancer took over his body. He experienced this disease full force for over 9 years. On February 9th, 2013 he lost his life to cancer. Relay For Life was always so important to my father. He loved the event and looked forward to performing on stage with his band, "No Alibi." It brought my father so much joy to see all the individuals supporting this great event. This year will be my family's 3rd year hosting a Relay for Life Team. Our name is, "Team Ollie" in memory of my father. We have decided to have a Fish Fry in hopes to raise mon- ey for our team. The Fish Fry and Silent Auction will take place on Saturday, March 28th, 2015 from 12:00noon-7:00pm at the Boiling Springs Masonic Lodge. The Silent Auction will be held from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. Maybe we'll never fi nd a cure for cancer. What matters to me and many of the millions of Americans affected by cancer is that we fi nd a way to help; we fi nd ways to help prevent the disease and fi nd ways to treat it more effectively. Today, I ask you to support the amazing organization, Relay For Life; and to continue host- ing events to support cancer research. Take pride in serving those in need. We never know how our lives will turn out. We never know what God has in store for our journey here on earth. -Ashley Biggerstaff Blanton By Bob Etheridge State director, USDA Farm Service Agency-NC The month of March is upon us and with the change of calendar comes the dawn of springtime and many decisions for North Carolina farmers. And this year, these decisions include several important choices on fed- eral safety net programs that could make a big difference for you, your family and your farm through 2018. The U.S. Department of Agricul- ture's (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) is urging you, and farmers and landowners across the nation, to fi nalize your decisions on updating crop yield histories and reallocating base acres for new safety net programs established by the 2014 Farm Bill, known as Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC). Updated yields and base acre reallocations could help improve your potential to recov- er payments when a weather disaster or unexpected chang- es in the marketplace negatively affect your income. March 31 is the last day to update your records. March 31 is also the last day to decide which program – ARC or PLC – is the right one for your operation. Each program provides unique protections. The best choice will depend on factors specifi c to your individual farm. FSA, in cooperation with a number of universities, has provided on- line Web-based tools, found at www.fsa.usda.gov/arc-plc to help you make this important decision. The online tools have already helped more than half a million farmers so far. If you have not yet considered your PLC or ARC options, take the time today to explore the Web tools and then contact your FSA county offi ce if you have questions. If you don't make a decision by the March 31 deadline, then you will be assigned Price Loss Coverage, the default pro- gram, and lose payments for losses incurred in 2014. Howev- er, if you complete your ARC or PLC election by the deadline, you will be protected against 2014 price or revenue losses. Farming is one of the riskiest businesses in the world. These new programs can help to support your agricultural operation during unanticipated downturns in the weather or markets. So, don't let this opportunity slip by. Finalize your yield or base acre decisions, complete those conversations between landowners and producers, and conduct your fi nal reviews to determine how ARC or PLC can help you. Avoid that end of the month rush, and make an appointment. Your Cleveland County FSA staff is standing by ready to help. Contact them at 844 Wallace Grove Drive, Shelby, NC 28150 or 704-471- 0235 ext 2 today.
