79th Season
Presents
Head Coach Emery
Olauson, is put-
ting the finishing
touches on his sec-
ond season with the
FireAntz. Olauson
was born and raised
in Canmore, Alberta,
and played college
hockey at St. Thomas
University. From
there, he went on to
play seven seasons in
the Central Hockey
League, and six sea-
sons in the Southern
Professional Hockey
League.
The 2014-15 sea-
son is Olauson's first
full season with the
team, after being hired in January of last year. "I've learned a lot this season,
thats for sure," said Olauson, adding, "I recruited aggressively in an effort to
change the culture in the dressing room and make hockey the main focus.
"With 12 rookies this year, graduating into second year players with more
experience, I hope to add some key veteran guys which give us a chance to com-
pete with older and more experienced teams," Olauson continued. "Learning to
be better myself, the team will get better and the recruiting will get better, to
give us a chance to become a championship caliber team."
With a total of 10 signed players unavailable due to injury, call ups or suspen-
sion, the FireAntz currently sit in seventh place in SPHL standings, just six points
out of the playoffs.
Adversity has
been no stranger
to the team in the
2014-15 season,
but they continue
to stay focused
on the things that
can be controlled.
The FireAntz
performances on
home ice have
been stellar all
season long, post-
ing a record of
13-8-2. With five
of the last eight
regular season
games on home
ice, Olauson
stresses the
importance of playing to his team's strengths in order to make a playoff run. One
of these strengths is, the FireAntz power play (20 percent), which is currently
ranked 1st in the league and has remained in the top three all season, "Getting
on the power play as many times as possible, as well as staying out of the box
will be key to our success, as our penalty kill has dropped off at
the end of the year," he concluded.
