MARCH 18-24, 2015 UCW 13 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Bright red high heels are a powerful symbol of femininity, but they can do so much more than pull a great outfit together. This 4th Friday, the Rape Crisis Volunteers of Cumberland County will host a Walk A Mile in Her Shoes Campaign. Men in the community will don their own sexy bright red pumps to show solidarity with survivors of rape and sexual assault. It is a playful and inviting way to start a serious conversation. Violence against women and sexual assault are community issues, not women's issues. This event aims to raise awareness and create a united front as a community against rape, sexual assault and gender-related violence. The walk will take place in downtown Fayetteville on Hay Street across from the Market House at 7 p.m. on March 27; check in is at 6 p.m. It is $20 to participate and this includes a T-shirt and two admission tickets into the reception. Students can participate for $10 and this includes a T-shirt and one ticket into the reception. For more information or to register, visit www. walkamileinhershoes.org or www.rapecrisisonline.org or call 910-485-7273. While you are downtown, don't miss the invitational exhibit Earthy Abstraction presented by Ellington-White CDC. The exhibit opens at the Art Council on March 27 and runs through May 16. The show features the work of artists who work with natural materials of soil, stone, clay, found objects, wood and other natural materials to create two- and three-dimensional nonobjective works of art. Coinciding with 4th Friday, Cape Fear Studios presents a brand new exhibit in its gallery. The North Carolina Faculty/Student Mentor Exhibit focuses specifically on regional artists. Works from professors at local universities will be on display, and each professor will choose one student whom they have mentored to display a work, as well. The focus is to encourage the flourishing and growth of emerging artists within the community. The exhibit will remain in Cape Fear Studios until April 20. Cape Fear Studios is located at 148 Maxwell St., and will be open late from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. For more information, call 910-433-2986 or visit www.capefearstudios.com. Headquarters Library, located at 300 Maiden Lane, is the place to go for great music this 4th Friday. From 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., the Piney Woods Boys will fill the Pate Room with southern traditional string band music. The band uses fiddles, guitar, autoharp and mandolins to create the sounds of another era. It is similar to bluegrass, but with a distinctly southern flair. It is a little bit of history for your ears. Light refreshments will be served, and the program is sponsored by Systel.
