4 | March/April 2015 Cape Fear Valley CEO Mike Nagowski always knew Hoke County was destined for big things. The county has been experiencing explosive growth in recent years, thanks to a housing boom and rapid influx of new troops. But it has also lacked local physicians, specialty practices and medical facilities over the years. So Nagowski promised a few years ago to bring more comprehensive healthcare to the county, including a new hospital. He began delivering on those prom- ises in 2013 with the opening of Health Pavilion Hoke. The state-of-the-art outpatient medical facility sits on a new 60-acre medical campus, near U.S. 401 and Johnson Mill Road outside of Raeford. The three-level facility houses family practice, pediatric and OB/GYN physicians, as well as a retail pharmacy and imaging services department. But there's no denying that the hospital is what area residents have really been waiting for. Steve Steinbacher is a principal with Criterion Healthcare, the Concord-based occupancy management firm brought in to help build Health Pavilion Hoke and the hospital. He said more than 200 people worked on site during the height of the hospital's construction. "That equals to roughly 2.5 million man hours over the course of construction," Steinbacher said. "You could almost double that figure for construction of the entire Health Pavilion Hoke campus." The resulting structures represent a combined $100 million investment into the county and will eventually create 350 new jobs. But the hospital will ultimately be judged by how it provides locals greater access to healthcare. In March, years of hard work and antici- pation will come an end when Cape Fear Valley Hoke Hospital officially opens its doors to the public. In the process, Nagowski's second, and most anticipated pledge, will be delivered. "We never doubted this hospital would become a reality," he said. "The people in this area need and deserve this facility. Now they'll have it." Thoughtful Design Hoke Hospital will boast 41-licensed beds with clinical and support services, spread out over two floors and more than 180,000 square feet of useable workspace. The combination will easily make it the county's largest and only full-service hospital.
