While all of my various career pro-
gressions were happening, there was a
Fayetteville woman in business who
went about her work fairly anony-
mously and remarkably dutifully. Polly
McMillan graduated from the Worth
Business College on Hay Street across
from old Highsmith Hospital in 1962.
ey taught business machines, short-
hand, basic accounting and many other
things that Polly needed to know in that
Mad Men era of professional business-
women. While Polly was educating her-
self, she went to work part-time with
Carl Coleman of Coleman Real Estate
and tangentially of Coleman Sporting
Goods. She maintained part-timer sta-
tus until 1965, aer which she went full
time.
From then on, Polly sort of re-defined
"full-time." It was actually a 'til-death-
do-us-part sort of full-time. When Mr.
Coleman surrendered his soul in 2005
while playing golf with his son, Polly
was at the top of the son's call list. She
received the sad news still sitting in her
same desk just inside the front door of
Coleman Real Estate on Bragg Boule-
vard. e time clock struck 43 years.
Still, Polly had not had enough of
business. She wanted and needed a job,
and that one was, quite literally, the only
job she had even known. So when Mr.
Coleman's apartments went into an es-
tate, Polly continued to open and close
