FLORIDA NUS A PUBLICATION OF SIGMA PHI EPSILON AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Spring 2015 THE BIG NEWS FOR THREE FIU ALUMNI (Continued on page 2) AVC President Steps Down after Two Amazing Years Mike Hernandez '04 will be stepping down as AVC president after two extremely successful years running the operations and communications for the Florida Nu alumni. Mike has helped bolster the communications among the alumni, was able to recruit a very capable group of volunteers to serve on the AVC, helped conceptualize, plan, and coordinate dozens of well-attended alumni events, and has set the AVC on a great path for success. Last year Mike took on a new position as the director of communications for county mayor Carlos Gimenez. The position has been extremely positive for Mike but has also been quite time consuming. We will be trying to find someone to fill Mike's shoes as AVC president in the next few months. Please help us thank him for all of his work by sending him a note at m_hernandez9282@yahoo.com. Two Florida Nu Alumni Honored by FIU On FIU's 25th anniversary, the alumni association established the Torch Awards to honor alumni who have had a positive impact on their profession, the community and the university. These outstanding individuals are given the title of FIU Torchbearers and serve as an inspiration to all university alumni. We are proud to announce that two of our Florida Nu alumni will be honored as Torchbearers this year, Andy SeƱor '96 and Tom Jelke '90. See page 2 to read more! Florida Nu Dedicated to Achieving New Heights Chapter Boasts More than 100 aCtive MeMBers T he Florida Nu Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is extremely excited for the 2015 spring semester. Despite a few bumps in the road during 2014, the Chapter is at a new level and aiming to take it to new heights in 2015. During the fall semester, the Chapter placed itself on social probation and also coordinated an internal membership review assisted by key alumni. It was necessary to ensure a bright future for Florida Nu and results have been fruitful. Intramural SucceSS Our Chapter has maintained our intramural sport success coming off winning the Sports Cup in spring 2014. During the fall, the Chapter reached the championship game for all three major sports: football, softball, and volleyball. The volleyball team had a great season bringing home the championship. As we look toward the spring, our soccer team will be defending their title with an undefeated season last year, with no goals scored against. We also expect a strong performance from the basketball team, in hopes of keeping the Sports Cup for two years in a row. chapter exceedS 100 actIve memberS Over the course of 2014, the Chapter brought in 48 members while continually Torchbearer story on page 2!
