From the Medical Committee Meet your anesthesiologist WAKE FOREST — On September 20, Wake Forest 282 sponsored the Superhero 5K Run at Carroll Joyner Park. Fifteen Masonic Home for Children residents and several staff members and their family members participat- ed. Deputy Grand Master Doug Caudle, Senior Grand Warden Bryant Webster, Grand Steward You require surgery. After a number of appointments with your surgeon, you arrive at the hospital or outpatient surgery center for your surgery. Here, you will meet a new health care professional: your anes- thesia provider. is person is either a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) or anesthesiologist — in North Carolina you'll very likely meet both pro- fessionals. e CRNA is a registered nurse who has worked for a period of time in critical care areas and has continued their education in the specialty of nurse anesthesia. e anesthesiologist is a physician who has completed a specialization program in anesthesiology. BOTH anesthesia providers are very well versed in provision of all types of anesthesia care, from general anesthesia to heavy sedation to spinal or epidural anesthesia. e anesthesia provider—aka anesthetist (CRNA or MD)—will meet you and interview you prior to surgery to learn as much as possible about your medical history. Often times, you will meet the anesthetist as much as a week prior to the By Joseph Joyce scheduled surgery. is meeting is a very important aspect of the anesthesia care you will receive. When you arrive for your surgery, it is likely that you will not meet the same anesthetist you met in the presurgery meeting. Worry not! Your information will be there for this anesthetist. You will not be "put to sleep" prior to enter- ing the actual operating room. Once initiated, your anesthesia care/surgical procedure will likely seem to you to have passed like the blink of an eye. e anesthesia medications administered provide pain relief (analgesia), muscle relaxation (when necessary), and most significantly, amnesia. In truth, presenting yourself—or your loved one—for anesthesia care requires a level of trust in others not unlike the level of trust placed in your brothers when raised to the sublime De- gree of Master Mason. If you have comments or questions you would like to see addressed in this column, please contact committee chair Dr. Marty Fischer at . Joseph Joyce is a member of Walnut Cove 629. Stew Cook-Off names champs WINSTON-SALEM — The 26 th Masonic District held their first Chicken Stew Cook-Off this fall. Doug Caudle (then grand master-elect) was the contest judge. Sixty brave souls from six lodges braved the cold weather to vie for the title. According to one witness, "All the stews were fantastic and the fel- lowship was great." Kernersville 669 cooked the best pot. Others said, "Just wait until next year." Plans for that contest are already under way. Seen here are, from left, Kernersville's Chad Delp and son Derek, then Deputy Grand Master Caudle, and Kernersville Master Todd Hurm. — Joseph Wages John-Paul McGuire photos Shaun Bradshaw and his family, demonstrated their superhuman feats by running. Eight-year- old Jamario, won the logo contest, and his draw- ing became the symbol of the event, appearing on all the T-shirts and medals for the Run. He autographed copies of his picture at the finish line. e event was held to raise money for the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford. — Bryant D. Webster Superheroes help kids Grill reraffle PRINCETON — When 16 th Masonic District Deputy Grand Master W. C. Barrett visited St. Patrick's 617 December 17, they asked him to draw the winning ticket for the lodge's scholarship raffle. The ticket he drew was that of Master David Rose. Rose donat- ed the Holland Grill Grand Prize back to the lodge to have another scholarship raffle. — W. C. Barrett
