February 4, 2015 www.DesertMessenger.com 33 Rotary Doings Contributed by: Violet Kiss Fall of 2014 Quartzsite Rotary spon- sored a new high school club, called Interact. Interact is a service club to give students an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends. They will learn about developing strategies, publicity formats, recruiting, and how to hold meetings, elections, etc. We are very invested in our youth in the Quartzsite area, for they are tomor- row's leaders. Rotary chartered the club this school year at Salome High School. Being its fi rst year, there is much to do in educating the new mem- bers, roughly 14 of them, in learning the Rotary way in having integrity, eth- ics and honesty while we pay forward by helping our communities. They have started their local projects and are planning on some newer ones. During the Martin Luther King 4-day weekend mid-January, our club decided to send two new club members to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) held annually at Pine Rock Camp in Prescott. Our club paid for all of their camp fees, and Carrol- lynn Henshaw and I went as Facilita- tors. As Facilitators we helped other students when they needed to talk to someone, needed further explanations or just to cheer them on. I certainly got attached to these terrifi c kids – all of them. Our two chosen delegates to this camp were Joel Freedman and Stephanie Claytor. We can tell they had a wonderful, adventurous time, and we hope to get a report from them very soon. All of the 160 delegates, including 14 foreign exchange students, were sepa- rated into 14-person groups from all of the different high schools throughout Arizona. Our two Stephanie and Joel, were in different groups and all Facili- tators and Junior Counselors were with other unrelated groups. The major things RYLA helps with is furthering their leadership skills and drawing them further out to become even better leaders. We hope that by attending they have started being the best they can be and learning more about them- selves in the process. If you ever run into Stephanie or Joel ask them about the "FISH" Principle. Please remember: we are going to have one "Action-Packed" Day on February 28th! The CASI-sanctioned Chili Cook-Off at Tyson Wells and the Legends of Country Music Tribute Band at the QIA.
