"Mr. Buck also told me that he had con- siderable amount of money banked both in Los Angeles, Cal., and Phoenix, Ariz., besides having money in a safe in Yuma." The reporter concluded his column with the following statement, "Should the above prove true there is also a pos- sibility that a will maybe in safekeeping somewhere." According to the 1910 U.S. Federal Cen- sus there was a Patrick Fitzgerald living in Holtville, California working as a sea- sonal farm laborer and may have spent his winters prospecting for gold on the Arizona side of the Colorado River. Also born in Ireland, Fitzgerald may have con- nected with Frederick Buck who had em- igrated from Ireland in 1851. Upon arriv- al in New York, Frederick Buck traveled directly to the gold fi elds of California where he was counted on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census as a 35-year old single male living in Sonora, Tuolumne County, California, south of Sacramento. When Patrick Fitzgerald learned of the probate announcement, he came forward to provide information about Mr. Buck's family, making no claim of his own to the sizeable estate. Is this the end of the story? I don't think so, but I couldn't fi nd when Frederick Buck's estate was probated. Perhaps there are readers of the Desert Mes- senger who might enjoy fi nishing out the research I started on the disposi- tion of Frederick Buck's estate. Was the Yuma safe deposit box located? If so, did it contain Mr. Buck's will? Was Mr. Buck's California wife with whom he "indirectly kept comparatively well pos- ited" ever located? If so, were there any children who could have benefi tted from the proceeds of the Phoenix and Los An- geles bank accounts? What about his undivided one-sixth interest in the Gold Leaf Mine claim since in 1899 Mike Welz preceded Mr. Buck in death?
