The boys and girls basketball teams have been extremely busy. The boys and girls have had fi ve games since returning to school. The teams have grown a lot. This season has been very productive. Both of the teams have worked and practiced extremely hard. Mr. Johnson, the boys' coach, has noticed a lot of effort and desire to win the games and they are striving to be the best they can be. FBLA is gearing up for Regional Conference and competitions later this month in Phoenix. The students will compete in events such as Job Interview, Impromptu Speaking, Personal Finance and other business-related topics. FBLA State Conference is coming up in the spring and they will be raising money to attend the three- day affair in Tucson. They will be at the annual chili cook-off selling raffl e tickets to win an amazing loaded Easter basket. We hope to see you there and more in the fu- ture! National Honor Society will be meeting soon to plan their in- duction ceremony and to pass out the letters for students that quali- fi ed to fi ll out the application. They will also be planning their highway cleanup day with FBLA. The Interact Club of Salome High School is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Quartzsite. This is the fi rst year of its existence and they have 16 members of ages 14 to 18 only. The main purpose of the organization is to build future lead- ers by exposing them to the needs of the community. The club has to do at least 2 proj- ects every year, one for community service and 1 for international ser- vice. This year, 2 interactors, Joel Freedman and Stephanie Claytor, will be attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), which will be held at Camp Pinerock in Prescott Arizona, On January 16 through the 19. High School Students, primarily in their sopho- more and junior years, are chosen for their leadership potential. Award winners, known as Del- egates, attend an all-expenses-paid camp to learn advanced leadership skills. Delegates reinforce their skills by using these new leadership tools in many activities which en- hance their ability. 41 Rotary clubs that comprise our Rotary District select Delegates and facilitate the event's curriculum. Art students at Salome High School are currently working on a project from the SNAP foundation (for more information see www. snapfoundation.org). The students are assigned to take photographs of what they love, respect and value in life. The students will be creating a time line of where they are now and where they plan to be in their future years. They will also be writ- ing an essay to outline their future plans. This essay must include their life goals and expectations after high school and after college, people they want to meet, places they want to travel, and the per- son they want to become. Then to fi nish the project the students plan on putting together an art show for the community with a few students reading their essays. The SNAP foundation will send us print outs of the students photos for us to use for the show.
