Layne Jr., Timothy Scott ELIZABETH CITY — On July 1, Eureka 317 Master/ Kentucky Colonel Stan Stewart, on behalf of Governor Steven L. Beshear, Governor of Kentucky, bestowed the commission of Kentucky Colonel on Eureka past masters Julian Copeland, Don- ald Kosik, and Alvin Arnold. e title of Kentucky Colonel represents the highest civilian honor that can be bestowed by the governor of Kentucky. e award is commissioned for an individual's contributions to the community, state, or nation, and for special achievements. Members of Eureka Lodge are aware of the positive impact that these three distinguished Brothers have had, not just on Eu- reka Lodge, but on their church, their community, and Masonry and are justifiably proud to see them honored. — Stan Stewart From left, are Master Stan Stewart, Julian Copeland, Donald Kosik, and Alvin Arnold. New Kentucky Colonels Balfour guests share skills ASHEBORO — On October 28, Balfour 188 held an Entered Apprentice Degree and a Master Mason Degree with the assis- tance of lodges from three districts including Invincible 251 (PHA) in Greensboro. When the lodge was called from refreshment to labor to confer the second section of the Third Degree, the in- vocation was given by the officers and past masters of Invincible Lodge. Kyle Mills was the initiate in the First Degree. Pictured here, from left are Morning Star 691 (PHA) Past Master Thomas McFarlin, Balfour 188 Senior Deacon Bob Wiker, and his son, Wil- liam John Wiker II, the newly raised Mason. — Jason Strucinski Enfield raffles for kids ENFIELD — When Enfield 447 Master Jerry Packer, left, de- cided the lodge would hold a raffle for the Masonic Home for Children, it did not dawn on him that he might win it. He even sold more chances than anyone else, further lowering his likeli- hood of winning. But, win he did. He then promptly gave the prize to the Home for Children. That was in addition to the $5,215 raised and given by check to the Home during Administrator Kevin Otis' visit to the lodge. Seen here are, from left, Packer, Otis, and Secretary James Whitley. — James Whitley Cooking to help feed WILKESBORO — On July 5, Mt. Pleasant 573's 2014 Carolina Masonic Pig Jig Grand Champions, Branch Water BBQ fired up their cookers for Samaritans Kitchen of Wilkes County. Lowe's Foods, Inc. and JustSave donated the pork, Branch Water did the cooking, and Samaritans Kitchen staff, and Mt. Pleasant 573 members volunteered to help. Together, they raised more than $1,000 for the charity. Here, Samari- tans Kitchen representative Juli Smith accepts a check from lodge Master Dwight Church. — Dwight Church From the Medical Committee Hospice, what it is and what it does By Darrin A. Helton, RN One of the best-kept secrets in medicine revolves around hos- pice and the services these extraordinary organizations provide. e "secret" of hospice is perhaps more of a misconception or mis- understanding of what hospice is and what it does. True, hospice services do provide care at the end of life's journey, care when there is no cure. e primary goal of hospice services is to enhance and/or maintain patient comfort and cop- ing. Also very important to that goal is family comfort in caring for their loved one and coping with the impending loss. ese goals are achieved by coordinating each client's individual care with their physician, specialist, pharmacist, nurses, social workers, medical equipment provider, chaplain or clergy, physical therapist, and certified nurse assistants. ey help coordinate grief support and volunteer staff in an effort to provide seamless, personal, and comprehensive care. Hospice services are a Medicare benefit and are covered by most private insurance with little or no cost to the client or fam- ily. Some of the most important people involved with hospice are volunteers who assist with services from fundraising to clerical to patient socialization visits. Hospice is not always a place or build- ing. ough many hospice organizations have an inpatient facility where clients can stay, hospice originated and remains predomi- nately an in home service as home is where the heart is. If you have comments or questions you would like to see ad- dressed in this column, please contact committee chair Dr. Marty Fischer at . Darrin Helton is a member of Mystic Tie 237 in Marion.
